very disappointing performance

bought this for a few applications including improving my home insulation and car diagnosis. even without having ever used a thermal imager, i can say this product is useless, it can tetect a temperature difference of less than 10c ans is Terribly inaccurate! completely USELESS

Resonable for the price
I purchased one about a year ago to test around windows, doors and look at ceiling around attic hatch etc. It works very well for this. Range is limited so don't expect to scan a whole living room from one location - 5 to 10 feet for range is about right. Works well on electrical outlets on outside walls - shows any cold. Just for fun I took it camping - lets you know if your camp fire is out. This is not an out door FLIR. You can not find bad guys in fields or deer in the bush. For use listed above, it works.
Yes, I recommend this product.

Wont work below Zero
I bought this thinking I could go out on a cold day and test for heat leaks out of my house. The specs are misleading, the sensor is good to -30c however the operating temperature is only good to 0c. So in reality it wont work below 0c

Great Tool

I just brought a house and I had to do an inspection. By using this tool it came in really handy. It took a while to learn the many settings it has, but once you understand each settings for it purpose it was very useful. I wish there were a cheat sheet on each setting which will make it great!
Yes, I recommend this product.

Probably not usable to detect leaks
I bought this hoping to use it to detect water leaks and moisture but unfortunately, I do not believe it can properly work for that as it does not appear that it will detect a small enough variation in temperature. 'Better" units will allow you to set the range within 5C, with this one, the range is minimum 30C and as mentioned above, it doesn't appear to detect temperature differences of less than 5C (maybe even 10C) I don't think it will work for moisture / water.

Q: How much and what form of image capture (JPG stills, MPEG4 video) is there?
How long is the battery life? Hours of use?
What is the image quality (120 x 120) ?

A: The battery life is rated at 5hrs on the 4 AA regular alkaline batteries it needs. There is no adaptor, batteries only can be used.
The thermal resolution is only 12 x 16 pixels and the temperature capture is +/- 4C, so do not expect to find any small variances in the wall. Unlikely you will ever find a wet part of the wall or places where some insulation is insufficient, as this imager just shows everything in one color unless there is a big difference in temperature. Might be good for electrical problems where there are hot items.
I did not try the picture capture but the box read 300kb which mean it might be a little grainy.
The visual camera was black and white only but had decent resolution. The thermal was color but the resolution / sensistivity was too weak to distinguish anything but the largest temperature differences.

Q: How deep can the thermal image read?
I know it can read through walls and doors, stuff like that, but how deep can it read? If I wanted to read the temperature in the middle of a 20 foot wide pile of dirt would it work?
2 Answers
A: You will not likely be able to see a thermal image through the pile of dirt.
Its not a matter of "how deep it can read", its all relative to the heat being emitted by the object you're measuring and how different it is from its surroundings.
Please keep in mind that this unit is reading surface temperatures. It does not read "through walls".

Q: I am a Plumber and need to know if this unit will help to trace pipes, Drains or water lines, either hot or cold behind drywall
10 years ago
1 Answer
A: It's not likely that it would work for that purpose. It reads surface temperatures and wouldn't be able to pick up the pipes behind the wall.

Q: Can you measure temperature if you're standing on the ground and you want to see any temperature differences of a window on the second floor?
How far away from the object you're measuring temperature of do you have to be?
1 Answer
A: It’s not about how far away you are, it’s about how much the temperature varies in your field of view. If the temp of the window is much warmer than the outside of the house around it, you could possibly see a temp difference. However, if you get closer to the window, you will see a more temp variance on the screen.
We know this is a little ambiguous, but it very much depends on the environment that you’re in and the object that you’re pointing at and how the different the temperatures are in relation to each other.

Q: Will there be a Firmware Update that supports Video ?
A Firmware Update that support low frame rate Video (say 5 FPS) is needed. Make sure it works well in low light.
The ability to accept a custom Palette File (read when it Boots) is also useful.
Thanks.
