the clamps are not reading anything

I bought this awhile ago, I've tried to take a reading, nada. batteries are good , the clamps gave no reading.

Some bozo said it won't work on a 12V DC auto battery. Wrong. It works perfectly, you simply select VOLTS DC mode and use the included test leads. Still a very basic clamp that's not very feature packed (understatement).

The discount price was low but after purchase I discovered that is clamp meter does not measure DC amperes -- so it has very limited use in my scope of work.

The Mastercraft Digital Clamp Meter is replacing and old analog meter. it just up and die. Mastercraft Digital Clamp Meter is an all in one which get rid of a few other testing tools. The Mastercraft Digital Clamp Meter gave me the amp amount.

A: The probe and the clamp isn’t to mesure the same thing. The clamp is to nesure the current. To be use on an AC hot wire. The probe is to mesure voltage or ohms. You must use the correct setting. If you use VAC on DC system or the other way, you will probably read 0. Hope I understand well yout question

A: For any meter, the clamp-on is for AC current only. You must use the leads to measure voltage.

A: I don't think it will show milivolts (only mA), according to the specifications #052-0729-4 resolution is 1V, and resolution is in mA for AC current.

A: Yes, and in fact you should aim to use this ONLY on insulated lines, for safety reasons. Else, be careful of shock hazards! The principle that this device works on can be gleaned from electromagnetic theory, from Maxwell's equations. Basically, though, a net AC current through the clamp loop will result in a reading. Note that you need to claim just one line of a typical 2-wire AC line cord in most cases, else the net current contained will be zero and you will get no reading.

A: NON! La pince ne peut lire que le courant alternatif AC identifié par le symbole sinusoidal. Le système électrique de l'auto fonctionne sur du 12 Volts continu DC. Seul le voltage pourrait donc être lu avec ce multimètre à l'aide des fils de branchement. La pince ne peut aucunement servir pour l'automobile.

Q: I have a circuit splitter and have been trying to measure the draw of my corded tools. The meter is set to 400~A. I am getting a reading of 17A’s. Is this actually 1.7A’s or is my meter defective? 17 amps would instantly trip the breaker, which it didn’.
