The online display shows the item without packaging. To prevent theft, the packaging is quite substantial. Using a large OLFA knife to open it wasn't easy. It is easy to imagine a severe injury while attempting to open the package. The online specifications define the power source as 9V. The manual details the 9v battery installation. The item is powered by 3AAA supplied batteries. The measurement accuracy seems reasonable when used on an item of known moisture content. The sale price is what I wanted. The proposed retail price is not realistic for the quality.

Q: Can I use this meter to measure the moisture level on an outdoor cedar pergola? The instructions on the wood stain brand that I brought said it can apply to the wood (after cleaning) if the moisture level is 20% or less.

A: Yes, this should work on a cedar pergola. Cedar is a softwood so make sure the tool is set on the "softwood" mode.

A: This would not be the right meter for this application. Canadian Tire currently does not carry a meter for this specialized application.

Q: Where are the sensors? you should have a photo of the back of the unit. I need to measure where the wall meets the ceiling and I don't know where the sensors are on this model

A: Behind the back cover of the meter are two metal plates. When the meter is powered on, the plates are given small and opposite charges. The potential difference causes current to flow, creating a three-dimensional electric field. When the back of the meter is placed against one side of a material with moisture on or slightly below its surface, the increased capacitance of the material distorts the electric field to an extent that can be sensed (as a change in flux over the sensing area) and measured. Displayed readings reflect the average moisture level of the material between its surface and the electric field’s maximum penetration of 3/4 in (19 mm). Moisture closer to the surface has a greater effect on readings than moisture at the maximum penetration depth. If you require a copy of the manual, please call our office at 1-800-387-8803.
