Poor quality, blunt easily, coating peels, stains permenantly.

I purchased these a couple of weeks ago on a 50% sale and wish I never bothered wasting my money. The coating does nothing to prevent sticking, though it does flake and peel around the knife edge with minimal use. The metal is cheap, flimsy and blunts quickly. With effort it can be honed to a sharpish edge, though loses this very quickly. Also the grey part of the handle will stain completely. I used one of the knives to cut meat and it has been stained a dirty yellow colour ever since. Nothing I've tried can remove the staining... though it actually stained even worse when trying to rub it clean with a dish sponge as a last resort!

No, I do not recommend this product.

  • Stained handle
  • Poor edge and coating flaking

great set!

I bought them about a year ago, and still love them! They are VERY sharp out of the box, and stays sharp pretty well. Over the year, I have only needed to sharpen them a couple of times. Cuts very well, and the protective shield keeps them in good condition and convenient to carry around for camping trips! The only thing is, those knives are very light, so they are not suited for heavy cutting. They are ideal for cutting vegetables, small pieces of meat and smaller fruits, but you might think twice about cutting a big melon with it, and don't expect it to break bones for you... Overall, this is a really awesome set if you have the right expectations. (now after using them, my roommate wants a set too! Definitely would recommend it.)

Good for beginners

I purchased this set one year ago on sale. Great price on sale, so it was hard to say no. Now, I am no master chef, nor even an amateur cook. I’m a newbie to home cooking. After a year of use, they have held up decently well. They don’t stay sharp for long, so you’ll have to sharpen often. Also, it’s really difficult to get a smooth edge, low quality steel makes for a jagged edge. My biggest complaint, and the main reason for me replacing them, is the fact that they are way too thin. I don’t have much confidence in the strength of the chef knife, as it flexes a lot when cutting through heavier cutting. The handles are a few cm too short, leaving my ring finger on the end of the handles. The grips, although being rubberized to optimize grip, does the exact opposite once any water, meat juices, sauces etc. get on the handle. Overall, for the price on sale, they are ok. If you cook more than a few times a week at home, you might get annoyed at the little issues like I had. I tried to like these, but they are way too cheap for anyone who cooks more than a couple time a week.

Great knives!

My parents bought a set of these when they were on sale a few years back, and are still going strong at the trailer with light sharpening between uses. I bought a set for my boyfriends kitchen (so he could stop using steak knives to cut everything). And then I bought another set for my camping trips. They're great knives, however, I would never pay full price for them, get them when they're on sale at Christmas time!

Questions

1 - 2 of 2 Questions

Q: I got these knives a while back and was disappointed that the black coating started peeling off so quickly. I stopped using them often which was sad because they worked great otherwise. Anyone else have this problem or did I get a 'lemon' of a package?
