Q: Why buy this over an ABC fire extinguisher? I’ve seen them listed by the same brand and for the same price.

2 Answers
  • A: Generally the “A” in ABC fire extinguishers is rated for less intense fires such as wood, paper, cloth etc. B is for oils, grease, paints, alcohol or flammable gases.is C for Electrical fires. Information on fire extinguisher classes are available online as there are many options If the extinguishers are the same price then buy an ABC fire extinguisher if it covers your needs

Q: How long before this unit expires and needs replacing

2 Answers
  • A: All extinguishers in Canada have a 12 year lifespan from the date of manufacture (look at the year stamped into the cylinder bottom). For commercial and industrial applications, they are to be inspected yearly by a local company and after 6 years must also be emptied and refilled (rechargeable units only). After 12 years they can be recertified to last another 12 years buit must go through expensive testing by a qualified local service company.

Q: Does this Fire Extinguisher meet requirements for marine use on a 16ft outboard motorboat?

1 Answer
  • A: • Fire extinguishers must be approved by the Underwriters Laboratories of Canada (ULC), the Underwriters Laboratory (UL) or the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG). • Pleasure craft may be required by the Small Vessel Regulations to carry a 5B:C or a 10B:C fire extinguisher, depending upon the type and length of the boat, and the equipment on board. • Effective April 20, 2022, any non-rechargeable (disposable) fire extinguisher that is older than 12 years should be removed from service. Refer to the date of manufacturing stamped on the bottle; for example, "05" means "2005." • If your boat is less than 26 feet, you need one 5-B fire extinguisher on board. • If your boat is between 26 and 40 feet, you need either two 5-B fire extinguishers or a single 20-B fire extinguisher. • And finally, if your boat is between 40 and 65 feet, you need either three 5-B fire extinguishers or one 20-B fire extinguisher and one 5-B fire extinguisher For the unit 468031MTL – the vehicle metal bracket is recommended to ensure proper installation.

Q: I bought this extinguisher earlier this year, before COVID19. I've finally taken it out of the box and see that the needle is very closely approaching empty already. Is this defective? The manufacturing date is within the last 5 years.

1 Answer
  • A: So long as the needle is still within the green the unit should be fine. it is like a tire pressure, as long as it is within the "zone". If it drops below, call tech support at 1-800-880-6788.

Q: I used my fire extinguisher to control fire but I only used a little bit. the pointer shows empty ? and slowly slowly leaked to zero. shall i dicard the same? Kidde 5BC Fire Extinguisher, White, 2-lbs from canadian tire ,Edmonton south

1 Answer
  • A: Once used, extinguishers need to be inspected. If single use( white background in pressure gauge) then dispose at local hazardous waste depot. If reusable and less than 12 years old, have it serviced by local service company.
