Cleaning out the water softener

I moved into a house where the softener wasn't filled with salt for at least 9 months. I cycled the iron out powder/water mixture into the tube and backwashed the system. All of the iron was removed and into the water in the toilets etc. worked great.

Q: Could this product be used in a plastic water holding tank. We have a well with lots of iron in our water and low pressure so we have a large holding tank in our crawl space that is now orange.

Q: Can I use this on concrete?

A: It shouldn't do any damage to the concrete. Just add some to a half pail of warm water, scrub the stain with the mixture and let sit for a few minutes. The stain should fade. Rinse well with clear water and you should be all set.

Q: can it be used in a well we have a lot of rust in our well water and it seems to be plugging up the screen on the submersible well pump.I was wondering if it was safe to pour down the hose that goes down to the pump to help clean the screen and is it safe to do so.

A: You would not want to ingest any water that contained residue so I would say no, unless you could be absolutely sure the Iron Out was totally rinsed away. You would probably need a water test so you should contact the manufacturer and get their opinion on what to do.

A: Yes, it is. I live out in the country and use the spray on my tub when it starts yellowing and cycle it through my water softener every once in a while to avoid buildup.

Q: Can this product be used on outdoor patio stones?

A: In all honesty I have never used this product on patio stones or concrete however it is a rust removal product and might warrant trying it out. Bleach on its own will usually remove rust from concrete and patio stones and you might want to try that first as this product is primarily used in plumbing applications for flushing rust out of old pipes, toilet tanks and water softeners. Rust remover is rust remover but I do not know if it will stain concrete or patio stones. Try it and if it doesn't work use bleach. I hope this helps.

A: Iron OUT should be pretested to determine compatibility with each particular surface. If found safe for use, Iron OUT should be applied as a solution following the exterior surface directions. Iron OUT should be wiped on then rinsed off immediately and thoroughly with fresh water, being certain to not allow Iron OUT to dry on the surface. Due to the porous nature of stone, Iron OUT may need to be scrubbed into the surface and/or a second application applied to reach and eliminate the depth of the stain. Please note that Iron OUT powder and liquid spray are not plant safe and any overspray of product could damage grass and landscape.

A: • When used as directed, Iron OUT may be used to remove rust staining from most surfaces. • As labeled, we advise first pretesting each surface to be certain of compatibility. If found safe for use, then Iron OUT may be applied either as a solution per the labeled dosage directions, or as a powder on a damp sponge or cloth. • Iron OUT should not be mixed with other chemicals, including bleach, however in this situation, I would think that there would only be a slight amount of bleach residue near the dispenser. I would advise first wiping around the bleach dispenser with fresh water, then wiping the area with an Iron OUT solution as labeled.

Q: Does this product work to remove iron from vinyl siding. Is it safe for lawns and gardens, pets?

A: Iron OUT Powder is formulated to remove heavy-duty rust stains from most surfaces, including vinyl siding. As labeled, product should first be pretested on the surface to determine safety of using on each particular application, then used as directed. Iron OUT Powder is not plant safe and may damage landscape. Any overspray should be diluted into the landscape to avoid damage.

Q: does this product safely remove rust out of darker coloured clothing (a dark red sweater to be specific), or will it leave stains or bleach the fabric?

A: Iron OUT will safely remove rust stains from white laundry. Each colored piece of laundry needs to be pretested in a hidden area (underneath side, seam…)to determine if the dyes are colorfast. If the dyes are not colorfast, the pretest will indicate color separation or bleeding and Iron OUT should not be used. If the dyes are colorfast, the pretest will indicate safety of using Iron OUT on that particular garment. If determined safe, Iron OUT should be used as directed and not combined with any detergents or other chemicals containing bleach, oxi or peroxide.
