Great Tire

I waited over 2 years to write this review to see how these tires would be. I used to get anxious when winter came around as I was not used to winter driving (am from a tropical island). I would get stuck in my old all season Hankook tires in my car in the slightest amount of snowfall. I dreaded winter driving. Not anymore. Bought these tires late 2015 and even though I mainly drive around town with an occasional trip on the 407/401 highways, I still have a lot of traction left. I have rotated them and have driven in snowstorms to TO and other places, adjusting to driving conditions of course. Wow. Changed my life (winter driving that is). Would definitely buy them again!

Good short term, poor long term

These tires were great for about a year and a half and performed well in snow and ice conditions when relatively new. I find that they still feel decent after that time (coming up to two years), but the tread pattern has worn out relatively quick on the dry season roads of western Canada. Was told by Canadian tire months ago that they should be replaced. Maybe useful as a surrogate for winter tires for about half the year, but not for extended driving on dry roads where the tread will wear quickly.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Lasted 18 months

Purchased in November 2016, great the first winter. 2nd winter they slid on ice and hard packed snow a bit. On June 1, 2018 I took the car in for routine maintenance and was told 2 of the tires are down to 2/32 and need to be replaced. That's 18 months...about 18,000 km.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Better than an all season tire

This is my third set of Optimo 4s, an all weather award winning (Germany’s Blue Angel) yet inexpensive tire. To be honest, I expected the winter rubber side of the tire to wear too fast in the hot summer. It didn’t! For safety reasons, I change the tires just before the wear marker bars are at the tread, after about 75,000 km or five years. This is comparable in cost to running a more expensive all season tire, longer. I would rate these tires for grip in between a dedicated winter tire and a conventional all season, absolutely good enough for Ontario winters. It does exhibit a bit of road whine but one easily gets use to that. I have had them on two different cars, of course enjoying not to have to change them seasonally. They are made in both Korea and China so if you buy them, insist the four you buy are from either one of the countries but not both. I have had mixed sets brought to me twice but with a discussion, Cdn Tire staff have gone back to store stock and provided a set from the same country. I also check the four digit date on the tires to be sure they are about the same age, within six months of each other. First 2#s are the week of manufacture while the last 2#s are the year.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Wears out too quickly

I bought these December 2016, they've lasted all but just over 40k and a year and a half. Was ok at first but wore out too quickly. Not worth the money. I'm replacing them with the Michelin defender much longer warranty... And km rating.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Q: These Tires not made for certain vehicles. My Van takes P215/65R15 Tires and our local Canadian Tire Store tells me that these Tires are not available for my vehicle. Does anyone know if this is correct?

  • A: Not being too direct in answers here. The 205/70 is within 1.1% dia. which is very acceptable range - meaning speedo. only off by this much or 1 kph at 100 kph. Must check load ranges though, especially for a van + remember giving up about 1/2" in tire width here too - which might actually be good for winter traction.

Q: What is the tread life warranty on these tires?

3 Answers
  • A: tread rating (warranty aside- rating is good for comparison purposes) varies by size of tires ie my 17" sizes states 64,000 km whereas smaller ones state 95,000. This is a greater spread than I've seen on most tires & may explain why some comment on short tread life while others comment on having 60,000 & est. another 20,000. OR it could be like 'anonymous' noted that some could be bogus entries by mfgr or retailer - I prefer to think the former. Large tires on heavy vehicles are much harder on tires-add in driver inflluences & you can have big variations.

Q: Does this tire come in 215/65/17 Its for a 2010 jeep patriot with 17 inch rims if that helps. Thanks,

  • A: You likely could go with 225/60 - its within the diameter allowance of most shops....however C-tire has a 0 tolerance policy on this & they have the exclusive unless you go state side. I know this based on invest. into snows & despite having both 60 & 65 profiles - wouldn't let me go with anything but what's factory. Guess they don't deal with pocket-rocket crowd either with the +1 & 2 mixes. I was wishing had your tires on my Compass - till I got the Optimos . Big step up from the Firestone Affinity's in every way so far....looking forward to see them in winter.

Q: Original tire on my Subaru Forester is P225/55R17 95H. Can I use either P225/60R17 or P225/50R17 Hankook Optimo 4s?

  • A: It would be possible but your speedometer would be incorrect as the circumference difference would make the speedometer invalid.

Q: Why did these tires receive such a low rating in ice(5.0)/snow(6.7) in the canadian tire 2013 winter tires guide and yet they are snow peak rated?

2 Answers
  • A: Just couldn't let this go...6.7 is not that low given I've seen dedicated winter tires in the low 7's (or 70's out of 100). Can understand ice being the most challenged as every sq. inch of contact & foot of sipes count here...& this tire is only half winter tire on the face of it. Almost no 'All season' give a snow/ice rating (except for some truck tires) but likely best would be under 4 in snow & under 2 for ice - my last tires would give .5 for ice when well below freezing. These types of tires are a great step fwd in not compromising too much!!!

Q: My current vehicle has 225 65R17 102s (Dodge Journey SXT 2013) - will these tires be compatible with my vehicle ?

  • A: Yes, see service but closest is 60 profile with quite a significant less load rating. Even is dia. is close enough - I wouldn't stretch the load rating that low.
