A: “L” & “M” stand for the thickness of the copper pipe. “ L” is medium grade and mostly used in homes. “M” is thinner and mostly used for light purpose usage if building codes allow it.

Q: what is the difference between the L or the M in copper 1/2 pipe

A: The M pipe has a wall thickness of 0.028 inches and L has 0.04 inches. So the thicker L pipe can handle more internal water pressure as well.

Q: what are the various sizes, lengths and types for copper piping?

A: Type "M" and Type "L" have the same outside diameter. The difference is that type "L" has a thicker inner wall that can handle higher pressures. Essentially type "M" is residential use and type "L" is for heavier use, commercial, underground, etc.

Q: What is the rating (K, L, M, Acr) for the Plumb shop soft copper .tubing. I need to replace LP gas line and require type L or better. Plumbshop packaging and pipe has NO rating or technical specs as required for copper piping.
