Q: I'm a new plant mom..can I use this on houseplants? If so can I puton top of soil or does it have to be mixed in with the soil? TIA ;)

A: The purpose is to make soil porous so it needs to be mixed. Pure soil tends to become solid after repeated watering. Porous soil allows the roots to grow more easily. Also allows air to reach them as roots need oxygen ( leaves need CO2). Soil should be moist but not soggy wet as that causes root rot. Alternatives are perlite or sphagnum peat for same purpose. I received $5 CT money offer to spend $30. I spent $30 on vermiculite but never received the $5 CT money so I unsubscribed to the phony offers. Beware!
