Edging defective

This product looks like it should be great edging so I bought 5 boxes. When I tried to install it, I discovered that the slot for joining two pieces was almost sealed over top and bottom, making it impossible to join. I checked all five boxes. They were all defective. I was very unhappy and returned them.

I thought this was ideal. But it did not interlock with each other as the plastic is hard and it didn't slip into the space provided. I actually returned it

Q: Can I use a hammer instead of a mallet?

A: I discovered this when working with plastic such as that white lattice fencing and these edgings. WD40 allows the blades to cut the fencing cleanly with a saw and if sprayed lightly into the slot of these pieces, they will slide much more easily together. They will still be tight, but it doesn't require so much force. As a woman, I can almost force them to slide together without a hammer.
