    Disappointed

Based on all the positive reviews I bought 8 bags on sale. What a disappointment! The mulch is mostly stringy wood shreds instead of wood chips. I bought black but its more brown in color. And there is no cedar fragrance at all. I used it at the back of my flower beds where it doesn’t show as much and bought a different brand for the front.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Good product. Used it to cover a flower bed in our front yard. Black colour helps contrast the bright colours of the flowers and keeps the weeds down.

    Yes, I recommend this product.

Bag had 33% more mulch than the competitor bag for about the same price. Got it on sale, can't be beat.

    Yes, I recommend this product.

This mulch adds an attractive finishing touch to any garden. It's very dark and rich looking. However, the hot summer months and rainy days both fade and wash away the color over time, like all dark mulches. For that reason, only buy when on sale.

    Yes, I recommend this product.

Q: can it burst into flames? I put down 50 bags onto my flower beds 5 days ago, about 2" thick and it is steaming. I am worried that it will start to burn. What do I need to do to prevent fire.

    1 Answer
    • A: Mulches, peat moss, or soils will not spontaneously combust on their own. As our mulches are sourced from virgin wood or bark the will support a flame if a heat source, such as a cigarette or ignited match, are provided. A lot of home owners become confused when a fire does starts in an area such as their flower bed, or planter box, and naturally tend to gravitate to the mulch being the root cause. This type of well recorded incidence to local Fire Departments has occurred for years, and is always sourced back to an incendiary device (cigarette, cigar, match) being found as the root cause. For wood mulch to burn it needs to be to be exposed to a minimum of 420 to 500 degrees Celsius (800 to 900 Fahrenheit) to autoignite, which is not only unlikely, but impossible within household conditions, but add a lit cigarette at 400 to 700 degrees Celsius (752 to 1292 Fahrenheit) to some mulch, and you will quickly get a smouldering smoky fire. If your mulch is emitting smoke it would be advisable to investigate for a cause and apply water. Otherwise it is most likely steam you are seeing. With the fluctuating temperatures in spring, it may simply be emitting warm moist air on cool morning, causing it to look like smoke.
