Q: Can it be used for an outdoor planter?

A: I wouldn’t use it outside unless you have a covered porch, I use it on my front porch for Christmas decorations but I have covered porch. It also depends on the type of winters you have (traditionally), if you live in the east you may not want to use it outside because you run the risk of it getting wet from rain and snow.
