Q: I mixed Castrol EDGE Extended Performance 5W30 Synthetic (Gold jar) with some left over Castrol EDGE 5W30 Synthetic Engine oil about 2:1 ratio, Any issues?

A: Different brands of Castrol motor oil are fully compatible with each other, so you can use the same grade of a different oil formulation for "topping off" purposes without fear (this assumes that the product specifications of each lubricant used to meet or exceed the lubricant specifications required by the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) for that specific use). However, we would not recommend this practice on a continuing basis, nor would we recommend actually "mixing" different Castrol formulations due to the changes in viscosity that can develop; each grade and oil formulation has been specially formulated in a manner in which you can expect maximum performance.

Q: What is the difference between the extended performance and the high mileage oil, and for a GMC terrain 2013 2.4L engine driven 180000Km would you recommend the extended performance or the high mileage and why?

A: Comparing the two formulas, Castrol EDGE High Mileage is designed for older cars with over 75,000 miles that need a high mileage oil to protect worn seals, prevent leaks, remove engine sludge, and prevent wear and tear. Castrol EDGE Extended Performance oils contain the highest level of fluid titanium technology and offers an increased level of protection for severe service vehicle applications such as high-performance driving, towing, or hauling, frequent short trips or idling, dusty, humid or extreme temperature environments. As per Castrol's lubrication guide for a 2013 GMC Terrain 2.4L, 5W-30 motor oil meeting GM dexos1gen3 is recommended for use. New containers of Castrol EDGE High Mileage 5W-30 with the new label design are no longer a GM dexos1 Gen 3 oil specification product and would not be recommended for use in GM vehicles that require GM dexos1 Gen 3 5W-30 engine oil. Castrol EDGE Extended Performance 5W-30 meets the requirements for this engine and would be recommended for use in this application. Before using any lubricant, ensure that the lubricant product specifications meet or exceed the lubricant specifications required by the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) for that specific use.

This information can be found in the vehicle's owner's manual or by contacting the manufacturer directly. Before using any lubricant, please make sure that the product specifications meet or exceed the lubricant specifications required by the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) for that specific use. According to Castrol's lubrication guide recommended for the 2014 KIA Sorento 2.4L 4-cyl, the preferred viscosity for all temperatures is 5W-30 motor oil, which is certified by the American Petroleum Institute. The Castrol EDGE Extended Performance 5W-30 meets the requirements of this engine and can be used with confidence.

Q: Please let me know who has used this oil long term and only changed it once per year. I know it is a hotly contested question whether or not this can be done safely.

A: Castrol EDGE Extended Performance offers the strength to perform for 32,000 kilometers or a full year (whichever comes first) between oil changes; however, this guarantee does not apply to vehicles operated under severe service application / severe usage conditions such as racing, frequent towing or hauling, commercial use, extremely dirty/dusty conditions or excessive idling and/or if the vehicle is under warranty; continue following the oil change interval recommendation of the vehicle manufacturer consistent with the type of driving you do (e.g. severe vs. normal) in these cases when using Castrol EDGE Extended Performance.
