    Broke off near handle!

This machete looks and feels nice. However, it broke near the handle when clearing a trail. I was hacking away at the base of a very small tree and hit it quite hard, but not with all my strength. The correct tool would have been a small axe or hatchet. This machete was always at my side in my tent next to a can of bear spray, a Les Stroud mountain knife, a very bright flashlight, and an SKS rifle with the bayonet extended while hunting. Fine for light brush clearing, but no good for bear defence or as a substitute for an axe.

No, I do not recommend this product.

    Questions

    1 - 2 of 2 Questions

Q: What the little"pencil like" device on the sheath of the Les Stroud machete? How do you pull it out of the sheath? Seems locked in,

    • A: It's a round magnesium cylinder with a small handle. You have to pull quite hard on it to pull it out. It snaps back in with a hard press. There is a half round notch on the machete blade that you scrape the magnesium with to start a fire. I nearly lost it when it fell out. I placed the magnesium in my backpack as I no longer trusted the snap in holder.
