STEP 1

Prep your room

Apply painter’s tape to all connecting walls or trim that you want to protect, including around your windows. Press down the edge with a flexible putty knife to seal the tape, so paint doesn’t seep under the edge. Cover your furniture and floors with plastic drop sheets.

STEP 2

Apply primer

Primer can be very helpful when painting a room. There are 3 types of primers — drywall, deep based and problem solving.

Premier drywall primers are useful if the walls have an irregular surface or you are painting natural drywall or wood panelling. They can also be used to spot prime any areas where you have just repaired or filled in cracks or holes. This will help prevent the sheen from looking different on the surface.

Premier deep base primer should be used to lessen the number of coats required for bright, rich colours.

Finally, if you have problem areas such as stains, odour or mould, you should clean thoroughly and use a Premier problem solving primer.

STEP 3

Mix and stir paint

If you are using more than one can of paint, pour them all into a large bucket and mix them thoroughly together with a paint stick for a uniform colour. Transfer paint into a smaller handy bucket for edging and trim or into paint trays for larger areas.

STEP 4

Paint all the corners and edges first

Start by painting all the corners and edges along the ceiling with a 2” brush. If the ceiling is a different colour, overlap that colour onto the walls by a few centimeters. It's easier to get a straight edge on the wall than the ceiling.

When you use a painter’s pole to paint the ceiling, stand sideways to roll out the paint. This is less tiring than holding it in front of you.

STEP 5

Paint the rest

The best practice for painting a room is to start with the ceilings first and then window and door casings and trim. Finish with the walls.

When you paint with a roller, start by painting a big “W” on the wall – about 1 metre square. Without re-loading the roller, go back and fill it in. Use easy long strokes to lay the paint down on the surface. Roll the paint into the cut line made with the brush along the ceiling. Don't push the paint on.

Continue on by starting in the next dry area and paint back towards the previously painted section maintaining a wet edge. If you need to take a break or stop for the day, be sure to finish the wall you’re working on first.

STEP 6

Use a container to supply your paint brush

When you paint with a brush, transfer a small amount of paint to a container and use that to supply the brush.

Only dip the paint brush half-way into the paint. Then draw the brush out and tap off any excess paint.

STEP 7

Apply a second coat

Wait for the period of time recommended by the manufacturer before applying a second coat. Be sure to give the wall a few days to cure before hanging anything, like art or shelves.
