Cheap plastic manufacturing. The clamping pads should have some contour to them to fit gun stocks better. When clamping tight, the gun tilts on the flat pad. Very difficult to level for scope mounting. I returned this product after assembling and trying it.

I purchased this vise recently. I thought I was purchasing Tipton’s Best Gun Vise, but I guess I purchased Tipton’s Best “Hunting Gun Vise. I would recommend looking at the pictures very carefully as Canadian Tire has pictures of two different Gun Vises as part of the product description which may cause confusion, as it did in my case.

I bought this since the price was reasonable, and I thought that it might be good to replace a home-made metal rig that I had been using for years. It's basically functional, but I'm not really very impressed with it, and I expect I'll still continue using my old metal rig for many things. The main feature lacking on this, and which is present on my old metal rig, is the ability to adjust the angle of the gun - on my old rig the support for the barrel can be adjusted up and down with a screw collar, which makes getting the gun set up for bore sighting convenient; on this vise there is no such adjustment, so you're pretty much stuck with the gun at one angle, which tends to be pointing down at the floor. The only way I could get a gun to point at the opposite wall for bore sighting was to put a piece of wood under the front of the vise - hardly ideal. Also the assembly is a bit of a pain. The instructions say to take care not to over-tighten the screws. But you have to essentially tap large metal screws into holes in hard plastic which don't appear to be pre-threaded. So very considerable force is required to get the screws to go in at all, making it very difficult to determine if you are 'over tightening' them - given that you're already applying something like 30 foot-pounds just to get them in at all. I will have some use for this vise, but it won't replace my old metal rig - it's longer, but lighter, being all plastic, so not as stable and not as adjustable. The nicest feature is the padded and adjustable clamp for the stock, which does make holding different guns firmly in place quite easy (albeit with no ability to adjust the angle).
