I bought this a week ago and just used it to seed my new lawn. Worked great!

Half the price of the identical product at greenhouses. Very easy to use.

Design flaw

Wheels as hollow on the inside which get a build up of fertilizer which in turn leave lines on your lawn from too much fertilizer or dead strip from too much lime. They tell you to check the axles to see if they are bent but it is a brand new unit. Don’t buy this spreader.

No, I do not recommend this product.

We're sorry to hear you're not thrilled with Scotts Turf Builder EdgeGuard Mini Broadcast Spreader, and we appreciate you letting us know.

When product hits the wheels of the spreader it typically means there's an issue with either the rotor plate, gearbox, or agitator. If any of these parts are bent or damaged, it will have an impact of how the product is dispersed. Another common cause for this is actually your walking speed. If your pace isn't brisk enough then it will have the same result.

We want you to feel good about using our products. That's why we offer a product guarantee. If, for any reason, you're not happy with the results after using this product, you're entitled to your money back. (Limitations apply). Give us a shout at 866-436-7645 when you have a chance if we can help out more. Scotts

Edge Guard is Nice - Spreader is Sub-par

I like the Edge Guard feature to keep from wasting fertilizer on flower beds and the sidewalk. The spreader itself, though, left me with stripes in my yard, even though I followed the instructions to go every 2 feet. I was hoping this broadcast spreader would help prevent stripes I was getting from the drop spreader when I would miss a row. Somehow it still doesn't hit the mark. For the next application maybe I'll go a little closer or mark off 2 foot distances so I'm sure not to miss. 🤷‍♂️

Q: I bought the mini spreader plus golfgreen fertilizer on the same day. The spreader setting of the golfgreen fertilizer is 22. It doesn't match the scale on the scott's spreader. Anyone knows setting conversion between the two brands? Please help.

Q: Can you advise the assembled height of the HANDLE?  Thanks in advance.

2 Answers
  • A: As the screws do not hold the handle in place (problem I had reported earlier) the vertical height of the handle from the ground up is 25 inches. If the screws held the handle secure then the vertical height would be 30 inches. The length of the handle from the bottom of the green fertilizer container is 27 inches.

Q: will this spread salt as well? i'm looking to find something for salting sidewalks during the winter, wondering if this product would work for that

2 Answers
  • A: the opening is adjustable so yes it will spread salt, and the curb guard will help keep the salt on the sidewalk and not the street

  • A: I actually chose the metal for this spreader. We went with a beryllium alloy for extra spring and tension equalization when used in rough areas.

Q: Hi: Just bought this spreader and found in the bin portion a metal wire like piece in the approximate shape of a question mark. What is it for and where does it go?

1 Answer
  • A: Thank you for inquiring about Scotts Turf Builder Mini Edgeguard. The metal piece you are seeing is a hook, in which you can hang the spreader up when not in use. If you have any questions or would like further assistance, please contact us at and one of our representatives would be glad to assist you.

Q: Will this work to spread sand? Can it be adjusted to spread a width of a walkway to avoid over spreading?

1 Answer
  • A: Thank you for your question regarding Scotts Turf Builder EdgeGuard Mini. We can not recommend spreading sand or soil of any type in this spreader as they are too heavy and would likely damage the spreader. And the only way to adjust the width for spreading is to use the edgeguard. Otherwise the spreader will dispense 2.5 feet on each side. You can contact us if you need further assistance. Q: How do you cross reference the setting when using other brands of fertilizer like say golf green

1 Answer
  • A: Unfortunately, there is no cross-reference or formula for spreader settings. Spreader settings, in general, are not related to pounds per thousand square feet of product applied. Spreader settings correspond to a specific opening size on the spreader. Settings are based on the size of the prill and the density of nutrients in the particles, as well as the desired amount of nutrients for the lawn. Because of these each product has to be tested in the spreader to determine a setting. We provide settings for our consumer spreaders on the bags of all of our consumer products. However, there is no way that we can test all of the spreaders with all of our products or all competitive products with our Scotts spreaders. We recommend that you apply a test area to determine the best setting for your spreader with this product. Empty the number of pounds the manufacturer recommends for a 1000 square feet into the spreader. Adjust the spreader to a very low setting (approximately 1/4 to 1/3 open) and spread the material over a 1000 square foot area (50 x 20, 33 x 30, etc.) If you run out of material before you cover the test area, adjust the setting a notch lower; if you still have material in your hopper when you reach the end of the test area, adjust the setting a notch higher. This will give you the best setting for that particular product. Remember: it is safer to under apply with the test and increase setting later as needed.
