    Works to cover old enamel

We have a heritage home with a lot of oil and lead paint we aren't equiped to sand safely, and some of it is semi gloss. I prefer to paint with latex so we needed an alkyd oil based primer so the latex would stick. After trying a few water-based bonding primers first, this worked the best for durability and coverage. The smell is pretty strong so have a fan or window open for a day or two. Also, our batch was quite separated - stir for longer than you think or try and get the clerk to put it in the paint can shaker, when I first used it it went on very thin before I realized I needed to combine it better, then it has a consistency a little thicker than paint and is very opaque over old paint and wood spots. It doesn't self level very well, so keep that in mind where smooth surfacing is important. Good stuff overall!

    Yes, I recommend this product.

    Questions

    1 - 6 of 6 Questions

Q: Can this be used on a boat trailer (bare steel). It says indoor use but also shows it being the recommended primer for Solignum marine paint.

    • A: Hi, Yes, you could use this alkyd primer on bare steel. The formulation of this primer has rust inhibitor included. Allow it to dry for 6 hours prior to applying a topcoat. Thank you

Q: I want to paint my stained oak staircase balusters. Do I need to sand first or can I apply this directly to wood followed by a coat of paint?

    • A: Hi, I would clean the stained wood very well first. I only use 2 products for surfaces before applying the under coat. For surfaces that have been finished with a latex finish (water base) I use TSP (Tri Sodium Phosphate), and for surfaces with an alkyd (oil base or bare metal) finish I use Xylene. I learned about xylene from a very experienced painter, and have used it extensively ever since, "BUT" make sure you test the finish first to see if it softens the finish (it will also remove dried latex paint, and soften plastics). If it doesn't soften the surface or remove it then it should be safe to use it. For either cleaner use a clean cloth, and apply liberally letting it sit on the surface (to loosen stickier areas) before wiping it (ALL OFF". Change cloths often as they start showing that are getting dirty or damp. I have found that with all projects "It is all in the preparation" which will determine the best outcome!!!! I was also told to use an oil base or alkyd primer on all surfaces, everything from bare wood to metal, and I found that the one that we are discussing at Canadian Tire has a very nice consistency (not wanting to run) and dries very fast. PS: you will only find litres of Xylene at C.T. (in the automotive dept.) but I found that I use it a lot, and so I buy a 4 litre size at Rona or a paint shop.

Q: Can this be applied to OSB? And can you recommend the kind of paint to paint over it? Thanks!

    1 Answer
    • A: Yes, it would work on OSB and the paint would depend on what the project is….cupboards, doors, floor etc….. inside or outside. In general, any kind of paint should stick as long as the primer has dried (a good 48 hrs).

Q: Hey! I need to know the ingredients in this product as we threw out the van after use, I’m just worrying about the side effects it can have on my unborn baby with the fumes I was around (I wasn’t painting but I was in the house) and it was very strong

Q: Can this be thinned to spray? If so what do you recommend thinning it with? how long between coats & how long until I can apply the marine paint?

    1 Answer
    • A: Yes, it can be thinned to spray, no more than 10% and we recommend using a paint thinner. Only one coat of primer, then wait 6 hours and apply the first coat of marine paint.
