Q: Can this kit be used with just one of the spacers? And if so, will it require silicone between the existing flange and the spacer? Also, does the spacer need to be screwed to the existing flange?

A: Yes I used it with one spacer attached to the existing flange with a thin layer of silicone. I waited until the silicone was cured before re-installing the toilet.
