does what it says on the box

Purchased 2 of these kayaks on sale for our B&B guests. Spotted them on sale in store (originally wanted the 12ft'ers) so purchased them at short notice. Was rather alarmed after reading one of the reviews, but tested both kayaks and they are perfect for our use. They do feel a little "tippy" at first, but not like they would tip over, great directional and work great out on the ocean for a day trip or a few hours paddling. The paddles included are great, they are adjustable and include the water guards. The foot rests are not adjustable as advertised, but do have 3 settings, so good enough. Comfortable and fun.

      Yes, I recommend this product.

      Could Do Better

Pros: - Canadian Tire Belleville and Pelican had excellent customer service -Was on sale for excellent price -lightweight and easy to carry - came with a paddle and foam kayak rack kit Cons: -Impossible to steer in a straight line. No rudder or keel or V shaped hull to assist in kayaking in a straight line. Constantly having to correct each paddle and fight to go in a straight line. Because of this I had to return it. Was SO disappointed because it was an excellent price and size.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Fun kayak but cannot take a spray skirt.

I am a beginner and this kayak felt fun enough to paddle around the lake. One issue that I found is that the cockpit rim is not designed for a spray skirt, it just won't stay on at all. Seems that the rim design is different across Pelican kayaks, you need to pay attention to it. For example Pelican Maxim 100X has a sharper rim and a skirt stays on. I am sure other models are like that too, so keep that in mind.

No, I do not recommend this product.

      Poor Handling. Very Unstable. Disappointing.

I originally purchased this kayak for my son and I bought the 12 foot Vanquish for myself. I thought this was a great deal because it came with the paddle etc (which are a minimum $50 each) and I figured that 10 feet was large enough for my teenage son since he had never been in a kayak before. We took them out as soon as we bought them. He experienced difficulty from the beginning and I just thought it was due to him being in a kayak for the first time. He couldn't keep up with me and was all over the place. plus he kept complaining that it was too "tippy" and he kept thinking he was going to fall in. He kept telling me thathe was doing everything I had tought him, but that the kayak just wasn't responding the way he thought it was supposed to. He said he thought the kayak was not very good. I went back to the shore with him and swapped Kayaks so I could show him it was all in technique and that the kayak was fine...needless to say, it wasn't. He took off in mine and he looked like he had been kayaking for years. I tried to keep up with him and I couldn't. The Peak would not glide like it should. I also found it was EXTREMELY "tippy" as my son called it. It didn't have the stability of the Vanquish that I bought for my self. Plus the weird thing I found was that just like my son, I was all over the place. I would be paddling along at full paddle speed just trying to catch up to him as he leisurely and slowly paddled the Vanquish and all of a sudden, the kayak would just veer off to either the left or right at a 45-60 degree angle for no apparent reason. I had read the other reviews for this product and thought it was a good choice for him. One of the reveiws said it was nearly impossible to tip....that is so wrong. I decided to test it. (In my Vanquish kayak, if I lean to the side, it seems to stop itself from going any further...very stable). When I leaned a little bit in the Peak, not only did it not have any resistance like mine did, water started gushing in over the side into the cockpit. I was not amused. I did a check afterwards to see the weight restrictions on the kayak. This one is rated for 275lb. We are at least 100lb away from that, but the way this thing acted, you would think we were OVER the weight restriction. Maybe it would be ok for a child that is under 100lb... But pretty much over that, it is just better to spend a little extra and get a better quality kayak. The next day, I returned it, spend the extra $200 and bought the Vanquish for my son and a paddle. It was well worth the money. I was severely disappointed with the Pelican Peak. It did not live up to my expectations and anyone that has actually kayaked in a kayak that handles properly and glides easily will never be happy with the Peak either. If you are planning on taking this kayak in anything other than your backyard pond or swimming pool (LOL), I would recommend you reconsider. Just spend the extra money and get one that handles nicely. The Peak looks like it should be ok, but very poorly designed. A true case of getting what you pay for. Just pay the little extra and get something 10 times better. If I had kept the Peak, it would have just rotted in my yard because nobody would want to use it. But now that we have 2 Pelican Vanquish kayaks, they are being used all the time because they are so much fun.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Q: Has the design of this product changed? Canadian Tire often sells products that are now significantly different as being the same, down to the part number, as products that were sold previously. Is that why the "tippyness" evaluations of the reviewers is so different from 2016 to 2017?

      1 Answer
      • A: The Peak 10' kayak model/design has remained the same this season. May we assist you with a specific detail concerning this kayak?
