1st one didn't work

a month ago

after purchasing, I tried it out in the parking lot. The 1st unit showed signs of being opened already. When I plugged it in, the fan intermittently would move and then just stopped completely. I returned it to the store for an exchange. The replacement also showed signs of being opened but did work and has worked for 2 weeks while we were on vacation. How do these things get back on the shelves after being opened?
