    doesn't last

bought this unit on sale. great price. unit worked well for the first while. did, perhaps 300 ft of 3/4" plunge routing. second project was a couple hundred feet of edge routing. unit started to reluctantly wind up to set speed with a lot of blue arcing around the commutator. it sat for a couple years and died doing less than 16' of 3/4" edge routing at 1/2" depth. BIG blue arcs all through the head of the unit, started smoking. brushes look fine; less than a 1/4 worn. cleaned the commutator. unit didn't want to start with power on. eventually kicked up to speed with big arcing in the head. fried is my best guess. not good value for the money. I have 1/4" 1hp routers I've worked hard for years and haven't had an issue. a 2 hp unit that gives up this quickly is junk.

No, I do not recommend this product.

    Good for a while

Bought this unit about 8 maybe 10 years ago. Do not remember price. Bought a set of 24 bits. Other reviews have identified motor/brush problems. I never had that - motor worked flawlessly. Right from day 1 i had problems with height adjustment not working well - really hard to adjust. Also had problems with collet releasing bits. Have used router as a fixed base and on a router table about twice a year for various projects and have been happy with performance over all. Until today. I left a bit in the tool last time I used it - 3 months ago - and today I can not get the bit out. And the height adjust is not working at all. Managed to get the router out of the fixed base and inspected for any problems like burrs or chips and found nothing wrong but it still will not height adjust without the use of heavy equipment and creative language. Have soaked the bit and collet in penetrating oil and left it on the bench - will see if the bit comes out tomorrow. If it comes out I will probably still use the router. If it does not come out then I will say farewell and get another brand. Will be sad to see it go because it has some good features and is potentially a great package. Closing observation - CT does not seem to support any of their product beyond about 3 years - I know that they want to sell product - but it is frustrating to not have support for something that should last 20 years.

No, I do not recommend this product.

    Good Tool

I got this tool awhile ago. Very powerful and great for doing all sorts of woodworking and around the house projects. It comes with a variety of jigs and guides that similar routers require you to buy separately. This is an all in one tool. I also like the green light which tells the user when the tool is plugged in, preventing accidental startups. If your looking for a solid router, This is it.

    Yes, I recommend this product.

    Questions

Q: Any Bits? Does this thing come with any bits? I'm thinking between this one and #54-7010-6. They're both the same price, I'm just curious if it's worth missing out on the 10 bit + 8 brushing kit. I've noticed router bits are really expensive.

    • A: When I bought mine it came with 20 free bits as a bonus. I bought the same router the week before for $20. less and returned it (unopened), Where can you get router bits for a buck each, even if you do only use 3-4 you have the others for when you do need them or for the hobbiest to experament with.

Q: How do you change the collett I have a bunch of 1/4 inch bits but the collett on the router is 1/2 inch. The 1/4 inch collett comes with the router BUT nothing in the instructions tell you how to change the collett.

    • A: Just loosen off the nut, pull out the 1/2" collet, and replace with the other. Might have to take the nut right off.

Q: Has anyone found a way to attach template guides? I've been looking for some way to reduce the opening size to 1 3/16. Is the only way to change the base plate? If so, is there a base plate available for this router, or do you have to use a universal one.

    • A: I have just bought this router and was dissapointed to find this adapter was still not included in the kit. All router manufacturers know about this standard attachment for mortising except, I guess, Canadian Tire (or the Chinese). I sketched an adapter to fit this unit and had a local machine shop make it for me in brass. You are welcome to a copy of this sketch if you can make use of it.

Q: Have been using my Plunge router on a Router Sled and the knob that adjust height has broken and no longer keeps the router in place. Are parts available or can I order and new Plunge base? Disappointed since I only used once on the Router sled.

Q: Variable speed 11k - 25k 6 settings What are the speeds at each setting?

    2 Answers
    • A: It's variable power not speed. The actual speed will depend on the bit and what you are cutting and how fast and how deep. But those speeds are probably more or less correct with a small straight bit spinning freely. My point is that better routers will increase power to maintain speed and this one will not. But for the price on sale... Can't complain.

Q: Can the depth be adjusted from above a router table? This question was asked several years ago and received two conflicting answers. So I thought I try again. If this router is mounted in a table, can the bit depth be adjusted from above the table?

    • A: I will confirm the previous answer. YES. There is a hole on the fixed base where you can put a 6mm Allen Wrench in order to turn the height adjustment.

Q: Is it possible to get a 1/8" collet? I cut some foam core board and I need to use a 1/16 bit with a 1/8" shank.

    2 Answers
    • A: While this router (and pretty much any standard router that I'm aware of) doesn't come with a 1/8" collet, you can get bushing adapters (look at Lee Valley) to take 1/4" to 1/8". The runout isn't likely to be a problem (especially for foam core boards).

Q: Compatible with 3/8" shank? I want to use this with a set of Forstner bits I have with a 3/8" shank, but nowhere does this router state it can be used with any shanks other than 1/4" and 1/2". Can this be used with 3/8" shanks?

    2 Answers
    • A: You can use bushings (look at Lee Valley) to adapt the 1/2" to 3/8". That said, I would NOT advise spinning a forstner bit in a router. Even at its lowest speed, the router is probably way too fast.
