Q: I've never bought rivets before so I'm wondering. If I want to fasten a 1/8 inch piece of aluminum to sheet metal, should I buy the long, medium or short? Thanks

A: When you buy rivets, you need to purchase by the diameter and the grip length (the thickness of the two pieces plus an allowance of about 1/16”. The grip length must not be too short (the rivet should protrude through the two pieces to be joined). Assuming your sheet metal is fairly thin by comparison to the aluminum, a grip length of 3/16” should be sufficient. If you use backup washers, you need to increase the grip length accordingly.
