Q: What are the main differences between this hammer drill and MAXIMUM 5.5A Corded Variable Speed Rotary Hammer Drill with Auxiliary Handle

1 Answer
  • A: The MX 5.5A Rotary Hammer Drill is lighter with a 5.5‑amp motor, variable speed up to 1,300 rpm, a lock‑on button, auxiliary handle with depth rod, and carries a 5‑year limited warranty with 1‑year repair. It has lower torque and overall brute force than the MC 12A and is intended more for day‑to‑day lighter masonry or household concrete tasks rather than heavy demolition or very large holes. The Mastercraft 12A is roughly 5 lb heavier than the MAXIMUM. That is noticeable if you work overhead or for long stretches. While the MC has a higher energy advantage i.e. 5 J is almost double the MAXIMUM’s roughly 2.7 J, it has lower top rpm than MAXIMUM: 850 rpm max vs 1,300 rpm. For certain tasks that rely more on speed than impact, the MAXIMUM may feel faster.

Q: It is specified "Chuck Size (in) 1-1/8". What that means? I thought that all SSD bits have the shank 10mm (~3/8").

1 Answer
  • A: “Chuck Size (in) 1-1/8” does not refer to the chuck opening or the SDS+ shank size. With SDS+ tools, the chuck size is standardized—all SDS+ bits have the same shank diameter (approximately 10 mm / 3⁄8") and lock into the chuck automatically. The 1-1/8" specification instead refers to the maximum recommended hole diameter the tool can drill in concrete, not the bit shank size. In other words, it describes the drilling capacity of the tool, not the physical size of the chuck. So while all SDS+ bits share the same shank, the tool itself is rated to handle concrete drilling up to 1-1/8" in diameter.
