A: Fire extinguisher technician here. There is technically no expiry for residential use. Only for industrial and commercial use. As long as the gauge is in the green, and you flip it upside down for 30 seconds every month or so it will be fine for decades.

Q: I don’t understand how a fire extinguisher can be rechargeable even though it says it is, because if it’s been used then it would be empty. It can’t be refilled, so what is being recharged?

A: Rechargeable extinguishers can get inspected (cylinder, hose, valve) by a qualified company/service provider and cleaned out, then refilled with the correct quantity of powder. They will then recharge the pressure with nitrogen per the model's design. There are limits on length of time an extinguisehr can be in use (on standby to use (6 years) that is) before being emptied, refilled and re-issued for use and they also have a lifespan of 12 years.

A: Most municipalities will require you to take them to the local Household Hazardous Waste depots due to the potential to still have some pressure in it (Class 2.2 - dangerous goods).

A: To know if an extinguisher is rechargeable, look at the pressure gauge. IF it has a fully red background, then yes it is. If it has a white background, then it is a one time use item. For servicing of extinguishers, including recharging, look in the yellow pages for a local Fire Extinguisher Service company. They all can service all the brands. For a recommendation, you can ask local fire stations who they use.

A: All of our extinguishers can be Coast Guard approved. They do require a vehicle bracket to meet that. This one only comes with a wall bracket in the box. A vehicle bracket has to be purchased separately.
