Questions

1 - 2 of 2 Questions

Q: I don't understand this product. It says it's for adults, but says it provides 35 lbs of buoyancy. So, if I'm an adult and I weigh 200 lbs (dry), then, will I just sink like a stone with this on? Only minimum weight capacity is shown.

  • A: Hi Oldschool2, It is not the product that you don't understand. It is the concepts of bouyancy and density. You weigh 200lbs out of the water. In the water that weight is affected by different forces. Firstly you displace a lot of water so right away the water pushes back against that mass, that is bouyancy, it is why metal ships don't sink to the bottom until they fill with water. Additionally bouyancy is affected by the density of an object for example a cannonball is very dense much more dense than water, it would sink immediately, but a wooden ball of the same size is less dense and would float, a water balloon of similar size would also float, but barely because it's density is almost equal to water. This is important to note. Human beings are pretty much made of water, our density is close to that of water and that means we will float, even if we weigh 200lbs. When you walk out into the water you'll notice that your feet don't hold you to the bottom in fact you find that keeping your feet on the bottom is hard if not impossible as the water gets deeper. That's because of bouyancy. So a life vest or life jacket only has to overcome a small amount of weigh, provide added bouyancy, to keep your head and shoulders out of the water. It is like 9-15 lbs. So if this product holds 35lbs, it has enough bouyancy to hold you and a friend. That's not how it's meant to be used though. Everyone needs their own PFD. Hope that helps. If you are still confused here's a link to a site about how stuff works maybe it explains it better than I did. https://adventure.howstuffworks.com/outdoor-activities/water-sports/life-jacket1.htm

Q: yes how many inflations can you do on one cartridge.

1 Answer
  • A: Once a cylinder deploys it cannot be used again. Rearm kits can be purchased at Canadian Tire which include new cylinders that can be installed and that will put the vest back into working service. All of the Helly Hansen inflatable PFD models sold at Canadian Tire use mechanism that do not allow for a spend cylinder to be installed. This is a built-in safety check within the mechanism, but it is very important to be aware that spent/used cylinders are not functional and must be replaced
