Q: does this detector work in RV's

1 Answer
  • A: Yes, it is perfect for it. however, do not leave it there for winter. bring it into the house and replace the batteries every 6 months (along with your smoke alarms) because the cold and any lack of usage can cause the sensor to stop working properly.

Q: How many years a CO detector can work?

1 Answer
  • A: That depends on the manufacturer and when it was made. Each has its own CSA approval for a specific lifespan. Up until 2013, no alarm lasted longer than 7 years (some as little as 5 years). As of most 2014 Kidde and some Garrison models, they last as long as 10 years. some models are still only 7 years. Have a look at your alarm's manufacturing date as well as the sticker on the side for the repalce by date. if there is no repalce by date, it is highly likely the alarm is more than 7 years old already. In stores you can see the replace by date on the alarm while it is in the package and the information on the back should also mention the approved length of the alarm's lifespan (84 months/120 months)

Q: How often do you have to change the batteries

1 Answer
  • A: On battery only alarms, you should change the batteries every 6 months. This not only makes sure they are capable of detecting issues, but also to sound the alarm long (and loud) enough to get you to safety. Always use alkaline batteries such as Duracell and Energizer. Never use dollar store and store brand batteries, they are likely to be too weak to last long.

Q: Can this detector be used for an industrial application.

1 Answer
  • A: No they cannot. These alarms are designed for household environments only and multiple exposure to CO can either make them overly sensitive or outright unable to detect CO. Garages, attics and unheated locations needs industrial quality detectors instead of small alarms like this one.

Q: Is the Garrison CO detector branded under Kidde? I was looking for company info for the Garrison CO detector but couldn't find this brand name. I'm just wondering if this product belongs to the Kidde company. Thanks

1 Answer
  • A: Garrison is the Canadian Tire house brand. They engage the different manufacturers to produce their products for them. The model 46-0309 used to be the same as model 900-0146 under Kidde but is now the same as Kidde's 900-0230. If you have any warranty questions about any of those particular models, call Kidde's tech support line at 1-800-880-6788.

Q: where can I download a "User's Guide" for this product?

1 Answer
  • A: This model was manufactured by Kidde Canada and the manual can be found at this location: http://www.kiddecanada.com/utcfs/ws-463/Assets/9CO5_900-0146%20Manual%20English.pdf If your alarm is chirping every 30 seconds with an "err" message, have a look at the manufacturing date. Until Dec. 2012, CO alarms had a maximum lifespan of 7 years.

Q: Is there an advantage to having a digital display?

1 Answer
  • A: Carbon monoxide has a long term effect on the human body and accumulates in the blood stream, thus displacing oxygen. A digital display alarm will give you information about the presence of CO as low as 10 parts per million (ppm) which is significantly lower than the minimum required level of 30 ppm for 30 days as required by CSA. Any readings above zero are a sign of potential problems. Sources of CO are not just the furnace or water heater. it includes cars, barbecues, fireplaces and anything else that burns something. Thus you can know there is a potential CO issue in your house well before it starts alarming because it has now become dangerous. It can be a simpel situation like leaving the door or window open while barbecueing last week-end, thus allowing fumes to enter the house. so take it with a grain of salt but absolutely do not ignore it. CO alarms do not false alarms like some smoke alarms have been known to do over the past 40 plus years.

Q: which carbon monoxide detector can replace my Firex COQ3 without reinstallment

1 Answer
  • A: FireX is discontinued in Canada and none of their carbon monoxide alarms are directly compatible with any other brand. You will need to install alarms from a single brand to make sure they will work together. In some instances some smoke alarms have worked with other brands but keep in mind they were never made to actually work together so there is no way to know you are fully protected unless you have all of your alarms from the same manufacturer. As well, the old COQ3 alarms had a 5 year life. We are now shipping alarms with a 10 year life (the first in Canada).

Q: What are the operating and storage temperature ranges? Could this be used in an RV, which which may get as low as zero degrees inside? Also, what is the minimum coldest storage temperature (could it be left in the RV over winter at temps as cold as -40, so long as the battery is removed)?

1 Answer
  • A: This product has been tested and will perform between 40 degrees and 100 degrees Fahrenheit (4.4 Celsius to 37.8 Celsius) . Reasonable exposure within these temperatures will not cause permanent damage. We do not recommend operating these alarms at, or outside these limits.
