Q: why does it blow smoke when I start it up.

  • A: The piston sits horizontally. It’s normal for lawn mower engines to sometimes puff a little smoke, oil can sometimes slip by the piston or valves. Don’t sweat it. It’s not a car engine. Change oil once and check the level once before mowing. You’ll be fine. Also make sure your air filter is clean and fits tight. Dirt causes engines to burn oil faster.

Q: What is the black plastic insert on discharge for. Should it be removed?

  • A: I’ve never used it. Mulching is best for greener lawn anyway, letting the groans go out the side seems to just make a mess around fences.

  • A: I’d get a master craft socket tool set if you haven’t already. Look for the long socket with the rubber gasket. Or find a socket that fits, very easy. Remove spark plug wire first, just tug it.
