Blue Rhino SkeeterVac® SV-15 Mosquito/Insect Exterminator

Product Details

The SkeeterVac disrupts mosquito breeding for up to a half acre, quietly and odour-free. Simply snap it together, turn on the gas cylinder, and the electric spark ignites the attractant. The CO2 and Octenol then lure biting insects in for weeks, while the sticky trap captures them. No tools required-- just hand tighten the cover over the cylinder and secure with the stakes. In as little as 4 weeks, you'll notice far fewer mosquitoes buzzing around your backyard and patio.

  • SkeeterVac® SV-15 Mosquito Eliminator provides a 1/2-acre coverage for attracting, trapping and killing biting insects such as mosquitoes, black flies, sand flies, no-see-ums, and biting midges

  • Cordless, just turn on the gas at the cylinder (sold separately), push the multi-spark electronic ignitor, and the SkeeterVac starts operating quietly and odour-free

  • 15,000 cc/hr CO2 output

  • Includes a cartridge of Octenol which acts as an additional attractant over and above CO2, FineTune allows you to adjust the Octenol release levels to match species in your area

  • Directional sticky trap binds mosquitoes as they land on it

  • No-tool assembly, simply snap the post to the base and head, dial in the Octenol level, and hand-tighten the regulator to the cylinder (sold separately)

  • Includes security stakes and fabric cylinder cover

  • Optimal results require 4-6 weeks to fully disrupt mosquito breeding cycle

  • Compatible with SkeeterVac® Octenol Attractant Cartridge (SKU #0593722) and SkeeterVac® Refill Sticky Trap (SKU #0593737)

This unit is NOT like the original unit. It does NOT have a fan or a catch basket. Bugs are caught on the sticky tape only. After 2 weeks, in the same location as my original unit, you could count the catches on one hand where the original unit with the fan would have a full basket every couple days. I returned the unit after 2 weeks.

Q: Where can I get service for the SkeeterVac Model SV-15? The furnace does not seem to light properly. The gauge does not go into the green after the pop of the ignition.

  • A: Mine was doing that this year. I called 1.800.762.1142 and they told me a couple things to try: 1- disconnect propane line from tank (regulator reset), wait 30 seconds, re-connect and try again 2- disconnect propane line from tank, then tank from engine. There is a 9/16 nut. Watch out, the filter will likely come out and it's small. I used 50 psi of compressed air into the engine fitting for 30 seconds, then replaced the hose without the filter. Started fine. Ordered new filters - $4 each, $20 shipping. They recommended changing filter with each tank, but this is my first in over 2 years. I also had a problem last year with the igniter - replaced the battery, and still nothing clicking. I undid the top cap with the 4 phillips screws (where you put the lure and that has the graphics) - and followed the igniter wire. It was loose from one end, so I re-secured it with electrical tape and it is fine.

Q: I can not get my SV-15 started this year and its only one year old. I called in and the support I got from Mr. BBQ is replace the fuel filter. However I can not find where it is & thus no idea what to change & how as there is no information in the manual

  • A: Common, recurring problem for the last 15 years of production. "Fuel Filter" is actually a TINY, the size of your "pinky-baby-fingernail", cone-shaped mesh made of Brass, that is inside one of the propane hose connectors. When you find it, you will see that it has oxidized so badly that it has become a solid mass - effectively plugging the propane fuel line. You can get a replacement part, or simply remove it. This can get you 1 or 2 more years of use - but it's a roll of the dice; sometimes these models are difficult to start after only 1 propane tank of use. When they work, they work very well - as long as unsuspecting birds don't get stuck to the sticky tape while trying to pick bugs off of it.

Q: do i need to leave this running at all times, or can i turn it on when i am outside only? will it have the same affect, if i do not keep it running at all times? I have a natural stream and bush behind my house.

  • A: Keep it running all the time. These models are notoriously prone to failure when restarting after periods of non use. Good luck restarting it when you get a new tank of propane. See the other notes about plugged fuel filters, etc.. A regular sized BBQ tank would last me about 26 days running non-stop. Mosquitoes are attracted to the CO2 produced 24/7.

Q: Does the SkeeterVac SV-15 have a fuel line filter? I'm trying to troubleshoot why mine won't start properly. I'm at the stage where I think it may be the fuel line filter mentioned in the manual under Troubleshooting. Does this model even have a fuel line filter?

  • A: Yes. It is the #1 cause of re-ignition failures. Blue Rhino was pretty good with customer service when I owned mine 15 years ago. It is shocking to still see these being sold without any notation of "IMPROVED" etc.. Read the other questions for more answers.

  • A: You have posted this question with a different model that does not use the tray. This model only uses the black and white sticky tape that wraps all around the unit as pictured.

Q: Extended warranty Everything I have read about this product is usually positive, however the next thing that i noticed on all the review sites is to "make sure, 100%" to purchase the extended warranty. Is this something that is offered?

2 Answers
  • A: Canadian Tire usually has a good warranty on most products. I am not sure what, if any, products you can purchase an extended warranty on. I assume people are telling you to get an extended warranty because they have heard about the recurring problem of trying to re-ignite this model after periods of non-use. After speaking with Blue Rhino about it, I learned that a small brass mesh fuel line filter needs to be cleaned or replaced to solve the problem. No need to try and find an extended warranty if you ask me. I will post the question and answer with pictures for everyone to see.
