Love this one!

I love this composter. The only reason I’m not giving it five stars is because I wish it had a crank to tumble it. Also if I could, I would go back and not put the divider in the middle of it.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Bit of a long term review. The one I bought looks a bit different but is assembled exactly the same. As others have stated it is a bit challenging tho assemble what with all the screws but once assembled is solid. Mine lives outside year round in Prince George BC. The only incident was a bear pushed it over and one of the tubular steel parts of the frame got slightly bent (easily bent back into position. . Otherwise I've had no issues with this contraption. Though I've noticed it's not as water tight as it once was and there are tracks of where it's leaked and dried on the outside. Which probably means it's time to check all the fasteners to make sure they've not backed out.

  • A: A bear with any human experience would be able to open easily. A big bear could break it open.

Q: How do you get the compost out... Through the 12"×6" slide opening? Interesting?

4 Answers
  • A: Just put a pail or wheelbarrow under the composter, turn it upside down and the loose compost will fall in. You'll have to scrape the sides and loosen the stuck bits with a trowel or or other tool and then turn it upside down again.

Q: is this bin bear-proof?

3 Answers
  • A: I would say no if you are in a area where bears are a problem. However I’ve never had a problem with any pests. I don’t put any meat, dairy or cooked food in it so the only pests it attracts are too small to get into it anyway.

Q: Is it good in the winter outside, example: -25 - considering Alberta winters!

2 Answers
  • A: At -25 the compost process will stop. You won't be able to make any compost over the winter but the plastic is durable enough to withstand the cold.

Q: Can you add egg shells? I am new to the whole composting idea and considering purchasing a composter and after reading all of the DO'S and DON'Ts I am wondering if a person should add egg shells to their composter or will it attract pests?

2 Answers
  • A: dry and crush the eggshells into powder instead. keep it inside in a bottle, won't attract animals, and you can sprinkle as needed throughout the year.

Q: Can i leave unfinished compost in the tumbling composter over winter where it will freeze?

1 Answer
  • A: We’re located in London, Ontario so we’re familiar with Canadian winters. The composter will be OK outside in the snow and you won’t need to empty it. You don’t need to do anything special to “winterize” the composter but you won’t be able to use it. The compost process is driven by little microbes that go dormant in cold temperatures. Once the compost freezes the microbes will go dormant and you won’t be able to make any compost until the spring thaw.
