Great LITTLE stove

il y a 8 ans
-- This is high tech SMALL stove. It has the potential to warm 1800sq ft, but you will need to feed the fire more often. Best for 800 -1000 sq ft. If you need a large stove, buy a large stove. -- Realize that a stove is only the hot part of the larger DRAFT (pressure differential) system. Complaints about poor drafting or creosote buildup in chimney is NOT the stove's issue. Please note that these smaller new technology EPA stoves should be used with double-walled NON-vented 6" stovepipe, and with an INSULATED SIX INCH metal chimney system. They are very efficient at keeping the heat inside the stove (to create efficient combustion temps) instead of blasting it up the chimney like an old smoke dragon. -- Chimney must be warm to create proper drafting; 300F internal chimney temp is required to keep chimney clean. Older larger or masonry chimneys should be relined & insulated. If using a masonry chimney, realize that you will need to high burn at least an hour to pre-warm a cold flue, and need to burn hotter to keep the flue warm. -- Poor draft = poor chimney. Masonry chimneys on an OUTSIDE wall are NOT recommended unless you enclose it with an insulated chase, or live in California. Note: minimum 12 -15' long stovepipe+ chimney required for most stoves. 2- 45degree bends are better than 1- 90degree. Add 3-feet to chimney length for each 90. -- Finally, wood must be DRY! Seasoned minimum one year and COVERED from rain/snow. Buying wood from woodman in fall in most cases means #NOTDRYENOUGH, or green. Buy your wood in winter/spring; stack it in the wind & cover top only. Realize that half the OAK harvested is used to make Pallets. Old (dry) junked oak pallets = best source of free ready-2-burn firewood. -- The deposits inside a properly functioning EPA stove should be light grey to white, indicating 75% efficiency. Plugged chimney or unseasoned wood = black. Your old smoke dragon wood stove was always black inside because it was only 25% efficient. -- This is a great LITTLE stove, but realize the stove is ONLY ONE part of a burning system.

Great Little Stove

il y a 10 ans
We bought this as the main heat source for an 1100 square foot bungalow. The stove is set up in the living room, a fairly central location. Our temps here have hit the -30'sC in the past month. I've found the burn time is dependent on the wood as is the amount of heat you get from it, just like any other stove really. We have no draft issues or complaints at all. We don't have a damper in the chimney pipe, using only the one on the stove and it performs perfectly. We burn a mix of dry / wet so we burn hot and have not had any problems at all. We tried the blower that was included and found it did almost nothing (very noisy as well) so ultimately we just put a table fan on the floor behind the stove and it circulates the heat throughout the house. The glass has stayed relatively clean but when it does get a bit of darkening I clean it using wet newspaper dipped in dry ash and it cleans it up just as fast as taking windex to a window. Just make sure the stove is cool to do it. Lastly, I love the flat top. It's made it easy to fit a pot or kettle and it's large enough that I could put my cast iron frying pan on top and use it for cooking. My only suggestion would be to keep an inch or two of ash in the bottom, again like most other stoves, because clean, it's a bugger to get a fire going. Otherwise, no issues at all. I'm very glad we made this purchase.

Exactly what we needed

il y a 13 ans
I already have a fireplace upstairs so I needed a small stove to heat our basement. Finding a stove small enough was a bit of chore. This stove is perfect. Though even this one will get the basement too warm if you let it. It's -25 at night and this thing will keep it nice and cozy down there once it's all fired up. The fire box is a little small but that's what small stoves have. Get a large stove to put more wood in and you'll wind up throttling it way down and have an inefficient burn with lots of creosote build up in the pipes. The fan is quite loud too, really blows a lot of air but you don't want it on while you're trying to talk. The door stays completely clean, very good air wash system! You can buy more efficient stoves but you'll pay an extra grand for them. This is the best deal dollar for dollar out there. We'll see how it holds up to continual use now. We use wood to heat our house 24 hours/day all winter long. This thing will get a LOT of use.

OMG What ....

"i don't see how it heats very well when you are puttung wood in every 3to4 hours. You can only put a few sticks in what a waste of my time buying. This was set up WELL WELL within Specs. Air flow poor Either full out or closed. It is the middle of winter and I had to take it apart to clean it as after one month the pipe was totally clogged up solid. There is no reason for this. Has been running full out of an hour each morning as it is out of wood well before then. Pictures of set up here and what problem is if more is required. Don't know why others are not having problems unless they only have a few hours a day of burn for show. Bought 8 FULL chord and it will not last the season at this rate.

  • R : Door is too high and when you open it the smoke comes out. That is why they say in the manual. " open door very slowly as to prevent that happing" It is still too small to stop back draft if opened too fast.

Q : Wood Stove I am considering buying a wood burning stove. Is it very difficult to install? I want to place it in my basement. Would you recommend a specific stove. my home is approx. 1800 sq.f. Thank you

  • R : I have been doing some research because we thought we'd put a stove in our basement, too, but everything I've read discourages it unless a person spends a lot of time there. The top two reasons are that apparently the basement gets too hot before the heat gets upstairs and its more difficult to monitor when the stove is too hot or smoldering. My son, though, has an open stairwell to the main floor and likes his heater in the basement. We are opting to put one on the main floor instead. Its a personal preference I guess. Good luck with yours.
