Cobra Hand Held 37ST CB Radio
il y a 14 ans
I had purchased this radio about 7 years ago, along with the HHWXST Model. The HHWXST Model has ten weather stations Built in to it, and also has an automatic scan feature. These Hand Held CBs are the best on the market! They have the maximum wattage allowed by Law which is 4 watts. I have used the 37ST Model with just the rubber antenae that it comes with, and was amazed at how far my Brother and I could Communicate! We were talking with Great transmitting and reception for about 4 kilometers. We lived in the country and we drove that distance apart from each on the dirt roads to do the test. When we hit the 5 kilometer mark, we started getting trouble transmitting any further. However, we could EASILY hear the truckers on our radios, coming from the 401 highway that was ten miles North of our location!
I lived in a Mobile home on my brothers farm and I purchased a magnetic based antenae for my radios, so I could Listen to the truckers coming from the 401. When I set the magnetic based antennae up on the roof of my mobile home, I was surprised to find that it had a metallic roof underneath the surface tar! I simply slapped the magnetic base antennae on the roof, and ran the cable down into the den in the mobile home, ( I drilled a hole in the wall) and Holy smokes! I was blown away to find that I could listen to the truckers that were travelling up to 35 Kilometers away! I knew this because they would often say what bridge or turn off, that they were approaching, while talking to the other truckers. I tried talking to them, but thought that I wouldn't have any luck..because as I said earlier, we could only talk or transmit for about 5 kilometers with the ordinary short rubber antenaes, but Geez! I was surprised when a trucker answered me! As I said, we lived ten miles south of the 401! the trucker talked to me for a while too! He was just as surprised as I was, to find out that a little "hand held" model could transmit that far! He talked to me, and I talked to him, until he hit the Melbourne turnoff, I was starting to break up then, which was about twenty five kilometers from where I was! I told my brother about it the next day, and he told me that even though the hand held oly has 4 watts, that this is the exact wattage that a mobile CB unit comes with too! So he said it only makes sense that with a good antennae, that I could indeed transmit that far! I wholeheartedly recommend these CB's. Cobra has been manufacturing the best Cb's for a long time now. The "Sound tracker" button that you see on their radios isn't just for looks either! it really does help to bring in the signal in a nice clear rich sound! Well,...what are you guys waiting for? go get one! you won't regret it! They don't come any better! Have a great day guys!
I wanted to purchase this product a week earlier but 3 Canadian Tire Stores could not find it in there stock room even though their computers said they had them in stock. But the following week I stopped off at the Canadian Tire Store on Danforth Road and it was on clearance for $57.49, so I bought it right away. It has more features then I thought and it was the higher end model from Cobra the HH38WXST which includes the listed features plus 10 Weatherband channels (7 US and 3 Canadian). I had 9 NiMH "AA" batteries for it plus a compatible 13.8v 300mAh DC AC Adapter to recharge the batteries while inside the radio. It works great, and next week I am buying a larger telescoping antenna for it from another store for more range. But I fully recommend it because of the Brand Name, quality and features and good price I paid.
In store this is actually the 38 WX ST. More or less it is the same one as described on the site.
Now the real review: great handheld, much easier to have in a car then installing a full cb (especially when there is no room in my KJ).
Range wise - it can reach a good 1-2 km. First day I turned it on I got someone using it and they were meeting up at a gas station about 1km away.
However, in comparisson to a non handheld, the non (with bigger antenna) is much better. I used this on the last Jeep run and could hear most of the other guys on the trail, but max is 2km range I got in the woods.
All in all its a great thing to have, but would need a larger antenna for a better range. (Note: when placing this next to my sirius sat reciever - my reception doubles)
9 double AA batteries is the only bad thing on it (the 38 WX ST) ... pair them up with the engergizer rechargeable ones and your good to go...
R : Yes! very easily! Buy a magnetic base antenae, these usually come with around 25 feet or so of cable. A cb antenae tuner box will run you about $45.00 or so, and then you can tune your own antenae, or you can bring it in to a CB repair shop and have the gentleman do that for you, for a reasonable price. The nice thing about an external antenae is the increasd range! You can still easily disconnect too and use the hand held for going fishing or whatever too. Hope this helps?
P.S. Just make sure that the external antenae has the same screw on attachment as your hand held does...just bring your cb with you when you buy the external antenae!
Q : Range difference?
Hello. I was wondering if a handheld CB radio has more signal range than a portable car CB radio becauause I live way out far and I need a radio with really good range. I'm not that familliar with them... Thanks, :)
R : Your Hand held has the same wattage as any Mobile CB radio. The maximum allowed by law is 4 watts and the Cobra hand held has 4 watts. The main difference is the antenae! if you invest in a good antenae, this will give you a much greater range. Also, you should "tune" your antenae. You can either take your hand held radio and antenae into a CB repair shop, and let a qualified person do this for you, or, you can go to radio shack and buy a cb antenae tuner. The instructions on how to tune your antenae will come with the cb radio tuner. Its a little "involved"..but if you follow the instructions you will be able to "trim" the antenae properly, and once you are all set up, yo should get up to 5 times the range that you will without it! Hope this helps?
Also...if you wanted to spend a bit more money, there is always the option of getting a "Ham" radio, some of these guys here in canada, can talk to people halfway around the world!
And lastly, some truckers do step outside the law and get a wattage amplifier..that will get them sometimes up to and even over a hundred watts! The main problem is finding a cb shop that will do the set up properly...as the amps are quite cheap, but the knowledge to get it set up properly isn't easy! But perhaps thats a little too much information? :o)
R : Hi Paulo; I am looking in my operating instruction booklet that came with my Cobra handheld model HH 37 ST...and apparently they have a charging unit that you can order, that plugs into the wall( 120 Volts ) which has a jack on it, so that you can charge the batteries right in the unit. it sells for $14.95 ( but then this booklet is about 7 years or so old now, so I would imagine it costs more now? ) they have a company listed in this booklet that apparently you can order this from, but once again, I don't know if they are still in business?... or even at the same address? In the booklet they give an address.. AVS Technologies Inc. 2100 Trans Canada HWY,S. Montreal, Que, H9P-2N4
They don't have a phone number listed in this booklet, but they do have a FAX number..it's 1-514-683-5307
I hope that this helps you? Maybe you could write them a letter? Or you could find them perhaps by searcing for AVS Technologies on the Internet? Or perhaps you could find out from Cobra where else you could buy one of these nowadays? Or at least find out what the output of the charger is? Then you might be able to get a similar output from an electronics dealer?
Myself....I simply take the batteries out and charge them in a battery charger that I have. If you do think that you will go that route too?...I would suggest getting a "quick" charger! you can get a quick charger that has a car adapter on it too, so you can charge the batteries in 15 to 20 minutes right in a car that has a cigarette lighter! I have two that are both very good! Energizer makes an excellent one! and the other one that I have is a "Rayovac IC3" 15 Minute charger. You can get a 12 Volt cigarette lighter attachment for both of these types. They are a little pricey, but in the long run, they pay for themselves a hundred times over! When my Brother and I go deer hunting up north, its a real treat to be able to charge all the batteries in under an hour! ( I believe that theres nine "AA" Batteries that go into each of the Cobra handhelds! ) Hope this helps you Paulo?
Have a nice day! :o)
