My experience has been similar to that of the other 1-star ratings. I bought it, and it seemed to work once. Put it back in the box and in my cabinet in the garage for a few years. Took it out last night to charge a battery, and the charger still looks brand new, but when I attach the clips and plug it in, it's dead. Neither the cooling fan, nor the lights come on. It just doesn't work...at all. Maybe I'm just dense, I don't know, but it's taken me a couple of years to conclude that Canadian Tire is clearly not the same store today as it was when I was a kid in the 80's. Everything my dad bought there at least worked, even if it wasn't fancy. Today, it's become literally a waste of my time to shop there, because it so often results in a trip back to return it. I'm done.

Been using it a lot lately during covid to charge the batteries since i am not driving much at the moment. Owned it for about 2 years now, always set up the same way, attach to positive first, then negative then set your Amps 6/4/2 and then plug in. Also I always keep it lower and away from the battery itself.

Purchased mine about 3 years ago. I use it to charge my boat battery. Has always worked for me. Never had an issue.

J'ai acheté ce chargeur au cas où ma batterie de voiture se viderait. Ce fut le cas deux mois après, j'ai branché le chargeur sur le batterie qui m'indiquait que la batterie était complètement chargée et refusait de charger celle-ci (même si en testant avec un multimètre, j'obtenais un voltage de 4V au lieu du 12 ou 13V habituel).
Le seul point positif est que j'ai pu récupérer le fil d'alimentation pour réparer une vieille perceuse, le reste est allé à la poubelle.
Non, Je ne recommande pas ce produit.

I literally just purchased on Friday today is Monday I spent all weekend trying, doesn’t work won’t turn on and I’ve tried calling the help line and they are useless I’m returning today because this is not right never even got to use it and it’s dead

R : I'm writing this in 2019. My workplace has a 2015 Mercedes van with two factory batteries, one under the hood (for accessories), one under the floor below the driver's feet. The owner's manual expressly prohibits boosting or charging to/from the under-hood battery. And because of the trouble of accessing the other battery, and the complex wiring around it, there are two prominent lugs under the hood to be used for charging and boosting. I think remote-mounted or concealed batteries are more common now than when this original question was submitted. Use the lugs.

Q : How long does this charger take to charge a marine battery (MotoMaster Nautilus Group 24 Starting & Deep Cycle Battery) i'm charging it at 2amp setting, it's been charging for 3 days. Is this normal to take this long?i switched the setting to 4amp and the charger stated that the battery is charged, when i changed the setting back to 2amp the green light remain on.

R : This charger will put 2, 4 or 6 Amps Hours back into a battery in an hours’ time. If the charger is set on 2 Amps in an hour the battery will have 2 Amp Hours put back into it. The battery used is a Deep Cycle 70 Amp Hour battery that can be discharged to 50%. So if the battery was discharged to 50% of 70 Amp Hours it needs to have 35 Amp Hours put back into it to be at full charge. It would take approximately 17.5 hours at the 2 Amp charge rate, 9 hours at then 4 Amp charge rate or 6 hours at the 6 Amp charge rate to bring the battery up to full charge. If while charging there is a draw of electricity from the battery (a light on, GPS, Amplifier etc.) then it will take longer to charge or the charger will have to keep turning on and off to keep the battery at a fully charged state. Best battery charging practice is to make sure the terminals are tight, shiny clean and fluid level is correct. Have all accessories that draw power turned off. Attach the battery cable clamps and then plug into the AC power. If the battery requires charging the amber light will come on indicating the unit is charging the battery. When the battery is fully charged the amber light will turn off and the green light will turn on to indicate the battery is fully charged.

R : Further to the Product Support answer, your question suggests that your charger is not switching to Maintenance (Float) at the probable end of a charge. I'm having the same issue with my 11-1517 (6-4-2A) charger. The manual for this charger has no Troubleshooting section, but the manual for the 11-1518 (12-8-2A) does, and addresses this issue for its charger. In the case of a seemingly long charge period with failure to switch to Float, the manual suggests to try switching to the next higher charge rate. (Power down, switch, re-power.) I know mine (2A mode) will charge to 14.2 volts (handheld meter) and stay there for hours without going to Float. When I unplug AC wait a few seconds and plug in again, it goes directly to Float (I can measure low current to battery). This is with the charger still in 2A mode. I once tried using 4A on an aged ATV battery and it did in fact charge and self-switch to float. I didn't want to do this on a new second battery and went back to 2A. Having seen the suggestion in print in a closely related product's manual, I think using 4A is a worth a try.

Q : Why does the charger go straight to maintenance mode? I've hooked up the charger to two different batteries and it goes to charging for about 2-5 seconds and then goes to maintenance mode. Just wondering what the problem may be.

R : If the batteries were recently charged or used in a vehicle within the last day or two, it's possible they are still at a voltage level too high to need further charging, around 12.8 or 12.9 or higher. If they are very large-amp auto batteries in good condition, they could hold voltage for quite a while before self-discharging to a level requiring full charging. If the batteries and charger are not defective, the 2-5 seconds of charging you see followed by the flip to Maintenance is something I've observed as well. If these are smaller format batteries such as those for a snowmobile or ATV, try the 4-amp position on the switch. I find the 2-amp position is too low a rate for these 18 to 20 A/h batteries, and the 6-amp is higher than I want to risk.

Q : Should the fan always be on? The manual states that the cooling fan will cycle on/off as needed. On my recently acquired charger, the fan is always on, even with ambient temps of 0 degrees Celsius, and while in maintenance mode. Can anyone else chime in as to how theirs works?

R : The fan on my 6-4-2A Intelligent charger comes on as soon as I plug the unit in. In my slightly cooler-than-room-temperature workshop, it always stays on while in Charge mode. The moment it changes to Maintenance mode, the fan turns off. In charge mode the top of the metal case below the handle is slightly warm with the fan running. In Maintenance mode, with the fan off, it is barely warmer than nearby objects on the bench.

R : Wouldn't recommend it unless you want it to over charge your battery, it over charged mine and it was leaking Sulfur gas from the vents. It doesn't even shut off once the battery is full. DO NOT USE.

R : I don't know what you think you need, 6 ga. cable is a heavy duty jumper cable; they are usually only 8 ga.for a car. However, note that 60 cm is about 2 feet. The charger is complete as it comes. The connector clamps are small, but adequate. You might need an extension cable to reach from the plug to car, in which case you need a good one.

R : Surprisingly light and small, has a place to wrap up the wires. In most situations you will need an extension cord, the plug attached is only about 1.5m long. Has a little carry handle, not really needed, weighs no more than a large book, about the size of two large paperbacks. Mostly plastic case.

R : Although they are referred to as “12V” batteries, this is what is known as nominal voltage. A 12V battery is made up of 6 cells each about 2.1V (fully charged) actually totaling 12.6V. Your Odyssey battery is AGM so it’s fully charged voltage is a little higher than typical at about 12.8V. Even though a fully charged battery has an open circuit voltage of 12.6-12.8V (depending on battery type) it takes more than that to actually charge a battery. Typical charge voltage is about 14.4-14.8V but can be as high as 16V under certain conditions and as low as 13.2V when maintaining (“float”) a fully charged battery. Also, you cannot consider voltage alone, you also have to consider the current. While you did not specify when you took the 12.88V reading (i.e. before, during or after charging) your battery is not necessarily fully charged – this could just be surface voltage. Trust the charger to do its thing – it is microprocessor-controlled and will shut off automatically once the battery is actually fully charged.
