Keep fan running to prevent water buildup
il y a 2 ans
I recently posted a 5 star review (Kathryn_K) but forgot to mention something and you can't edit reviews so this is just an add-on bit to my other review. Sometimes in the winter if you don't have a cover on the back of the AC some water/snow can get in the AC and freeze and sometimes when it's running you'll hear some little noises probably little ice chunks being flung around. As far as preventing water from building up inside the AC it's really important to keep the fan running even if you don't want the room cooled down at least have just the fan on because it will evaporate the water so you don't end up with the sound of sloshing water, sometimes that's happened with mine but I realized very soon that I just had to keep the fan running all the time and it does really help it all depends on how humid your room is and how much moisture is in the air.
I originally bought my GREE 5,000 BTU air conditioner at Canadian Tire about 10 years ago so my review is really good just based on the fact of how long I've had it and the fact that it's still working. Let me tell you this AC not only cools great but it's super reliable! I've had it in my 9 ft. x 12 ft. bedroom and when the door is closed the room can get super cold if the coolant temp is right to the max, on a really hot day when I walk into my apartment I can feel the coolness in the hallway so some air does come out of the room a bit. It is a bit noisy even on the first fan speed but I got used to the noise very quickly and I actually wouldn't even be able to sleep without it so I use the fan as white noise to block out some of my neighbours noise as well as noise from outside. This AC has really impressed me because I've had it running 24/7 all year round for all these years maybe the odd time I've turned the fan off but it's been running pretty much 24/7. In the winter time I'll just have the fan running because I found that when I had the fan off and rain or snow got inside the AC it would freeze up and then the fan wouldn't turn on and being as I've used the fan for white noise I just started leaving it on 24/7 so no freezing would end up happening. I'm so glad that this AC is still available being made because I'm definitely going to buy another, for the price of the AC originally what I paid for it and how great it's been I can highly recommend this AC. I definitely don't want a digital AC with remote control so these type with the knobs it's great that they're still being made. One reviewer mentioned that the AC has sleep mode I don't know what the person means by that because it basically has off, low/high fan speed, and the coolant temperature knob. Whatever you set the coolant temperature knob to when the temperature in the room reaches that temperature it will automatically shut the compressor off and I have found that when the compressor kicks off and when it comes back on it's not that loud. Buy this AC you won't be disappointed!
After 1 summer of use it no longer cooled. There was ice on the evaporator, which is a sign that the coolant was low, due to a leak. Gree Canada told me that my warranty had run out and they had no service agreements with anyone. They simply refused to do anything, even told me that it was not one of theirs because I purchased at CND Tire! I would not recommend this company to anyone.
It worked fine for one summer (not great, but for the price it was fine). However, when I turned it on this summer, it flooded my apartment. I would love to trouble shoot and fix it, but I don't have the manual and despite online searching, could not find one. Also, CT seems to have closed the questions for this item (or their website has glitches) because I am not able to post a new question. So, for an item that lasted one summer, has no online support, and basically caused damage to my flooring, it gets one star. I wish I'd just spent a few hundred more and gotten a stand up one.
My air conditioner fills with water and it sounds like a water stream or a water circulator from a fish tank. Is there something that I didn't do to make the water drain??? Cuz it makes a ton of noise aswell.... Someone please help!!

Q : Does water drip from these?
In my apartment window the screen doesn't open so I can't put it all the way through. I have to set this by a window and its important no water comes from this unit so it won't cause water damage.
R : Because of the extra buildup of water, does this make noise with the fan blade? There is a noise (watery/scratchy type), and I wonder if its the water hitting the fan blade which causes that. Would that pose a problem? I put a 1/2" thick of rigid insulation the width of the window, so that it is level on the bottom rail. The unit does slope downward to the outside.
Q : Setting the temperature
Mine doesn't seem to stay on long enough to cool the room (it's a very small bedroom so size shouldn't be the problem). Some of the questions and answers here refer to a thermostat setting which I don't see anywhere, how do I set this?
R : Temp setting is the dial above fan/cooling fan mode dial, setting it 20 to 12 if you look at it from a clocks point of view should do you, shut the door if you want it really cool or use a ceiling fan pulling air up cold air sinks to the floor remember.
R : I just put one into a straight forward 60" side slider approx. 28"x34" panels each side. I had to take out the removable slider and build an insert 2x2 frame/sheeted insert to mount the a/c in.
Q : Would this air conditioner be effective enough in my room?
My room is a square, about 3m across from one side to the other, with a height of about 2.7m.
Q : Can the Air Conditioner be put on its side?
my window is the perfect fit but i dont want to take it out and block out any sun from coming in so i was wondering if it can be put on its side to fit in the window screen opening
R : No. Absolutely not.
ALWAYS operate equipment containing compressors in the orientation they were designed for.
AC units, dehumidifiers, coolers, and refrigerators will fail and be rendered useless if they are not kept straight & level.
R : Many people might use a conventional light-duty extension cord that would be a serious fire hazard.
Also, your table saw would not run as long, or run unattended the way an AC unit would.
Finally, both ends of the extension cord (particularly the female end) must be clean and free of dirt and corrosion, which would cause heating or arcing.
If you must use an extension cord, get one that is designed for the purpose, such as the Canadian Tire Heavy-Duty Air Conditioning Cord, Product #52-2419-0.
Q : when the unit is used in fan setting, will it pull in air from outside or just recycle the air already in the room?
I live in a downtown highrise and only have one small window in my bedroom. it would be great if i could install a unit which could pull in cooler, fresh air from outside in the nights, then be turned back on for air conditioning in the daytime.
R : The Gree 5,000 BTU unit does not have any "air exchange" capability.
Some AC units can exhaust air out, but I am not aware of any that can pull air in. That would defeat the purpose of the AC by pulling hot air into a room you are trying to cool down.
i understand your desire to use the cool air at night, but that feature is not present here.
R : The fan will run continuously, at high or low speed, in all modes.
The compressor (cooling) should cycle on & off depending on the thermostat setting.
If the compressor is always running regardless of how you set the temperature control, then your unit might have a defective thermostat. Check with the manufacturer.
