I bought this to feel safe but now I will never feel safe carrying bear spray with me. I brought it with my backpack and had it on the side and the safety cap came off while I was going through the woods and I put my pack in the car and it went off spraying everywhere and my hands felt on fire for hours even after washing for hours. I am definitely never using this product again unless there is a pin or something more safe to prevent accidental triggers

je n'ai pas eu la chance de l'utiliser réellement.
Toutefois le nuage de cayenne qui en sort devrait être vraiment efficace.

Bear Spray - overpriced

First off ... its bear spray, so ideally don't have to try it. Gave a lower rating as the price at Canadian Tire is significantly higher than at other places. Only reason bought here is did not have time to go to buy elsewhere.

Q : How much of this should I apply and where before going in to bear country? Is it ok to just put it on my upper body if I'm wearing shorts, or should I apply it to all exposed skin?

R : Hi Naturewalker, That's a great question as many people do not know how to use bear spray properly. Putting this product on your skin or clothing provides only a very temporary solution, and needs to be re-applied every few hours. Experienced outdoorspersons, like myself, find that a decent burst taken rectally lasts days and keeps predators away as you sweat out the aforementioned spray. (It's best to do this in the washroom). DO NOT TAKE ORALLY! It will leave an unpleasant taste. That's why that bear didn't eat me before. Not only is this method more effective, but will likely save you hundreds each year and helps to reduce climate change as you will need to only purchase a few canisters as apposed to dozens. Safe camping...and happy Pride week Calgary!!!!

R : Contact the local police agency as every region has different rules & regulations. Example being you can not open or concealed carry bear spray within the City of Toronto limits yet it's legal to open or conceal carry and use on intended wildlife in the Durham Region.

R : As almost all animals are affected by capcasin which is the ingredient found in the hot chillie peppers that make it hot. This is what is in pepper spray that makes it hurt the animal that is attacking. This will work for the purpose you desire but is a very expensive way of delivering it. It will also put way to much as controlling the amount of spray is impossible. Make your own by mixing Ground Cayenne pepper with water and spraying it in the area you wish to protect. You may add add few drops of dish washing soap to the solution to make it stick better. I should last till it rains or you water the plants.

R : The 225gr container sprays for about 5 seconds and about 8 seconds for the 325gr. I don't think CT sells the 325gr Try not to use it all up in one long burst. You may need it again later against another bear.

R : The actual weapon the word "mace" refers to is tear gas. The company Mace was a big producer of this stuff back in the old world war times. It was first used by law enforcement around the 50s I believe, and was literally a can of aerosolized tear gas. However tear gas could potentially have long term health affects and could take up to 60 seconds plus for the full effects to kick in. So a more effective spray solution was sought out and thus pepper spray was invented. While pepper sprays don't pose as serious a risk to ones health as tear gas, the effects kick in almost immediately and are very very painful for most people, even more so then tear gas. Nowadays people use the word mace to refer to pepper sprays and tear gas alike. Mace itself is a self defense weapons brand name, the technical definition is tear gas, people more commonly use this word in reference to pepper spray.

R : According to the FAA website: "Self Defense Sprays - One 4 ounce (118ml) container of mace or pepper spray is permitted in checked baggage provided it is equipped with a safety mechanism to prevent accidental discharge. Self Defense Sprays containing more than 2% by mass of Tear Gas (CS or CN) are prohibited in Checked Baggage." But I would check with the airline first.
