Look for vacuums specifically made for above-ground pools that connect to the pool skimmer. Use the vacuum head to gently agitate debris into the path of suction where it will be pulled to the filter. Empty the collection basket often when vacuuming. Make sure the water level is high enough that the pool vacuum head does not touch the bottom, which could damage both the vacuum and pool surface.

The best practice is to skim your pool first before vacuuming to remove any debris floating on the surface. This ensures your pool vacuum can efficiently pick up smaller particles from the bottom and walls.

How do you vacuum a pool with a sand filter?

If you have a sand filter, be sure to backwash it after vacuuming to rinse built-up dirt from the filter. Always shut off power to your pump before detaching the vacuum head and store it in a well-ventilated area to dry completely when finished. For larger pools, consider purchasing an extra long vacuum hose or telescoping vacuum pole for easier cleaning of all areas.
