Small can be good

This is the smallest of the daypacks I checked out at the store, and just about right for a walk in the woods with a spare jacket, a water bottle, lunch, and maybe a small camera or binoculars. The two full-length compartments each have a zippered inside pocket and one other pouch. A sleeve on the back is suitable for a narrow bottle (I don't like carrying water inside, where it might spill on the electronics), and two shorter ones on the sides might carry bear spray, snacks, or sunscreen. The side and chest straps seem superfluous on a bag this size, and I'll likely trim them off, as they just get in the way. There's also a laced bungee that's unlikely to see much use, because if you need to tie things to the outside, you should just get a bigger pack!
