Product Details

The Tekonsha Brakeman IV digital trailer brake controller provides safety and connection when you need it most. As a time-based controller, the Brakeman IV is a great choice for basic towing needs. This compact controller works by electronically connecting your vehicle and your trailer. When you hit the brakes in your tow vehicle, it generates an output signal that ramps up, or increases over a period of time, applying braking power to your trailer at a fixed rate. The Brakeman IV has up-front buttons so you can easily adjust power output, sync (the time it takes for the brakes fully engage) which is the aggressiveness with which the controller applies the brakes, and engage manual override to help you brake safely when an unexpected stop pops up. Because the Brakeman IV is a time-based controller, there’s no requirement that it be positioned in the direction of travel; it can be installed anywhere you like as long as it is within reach of the driver. Plus, the Plug & Play feature allows for quick and easy connection with your vehicle’s wiring. The Brakeman IV trailer brake controller works with1-4 axle trailers, comes with all the mounting hardware needed for installation, and is backed by a limited lifetime warranty.

  • The Reese Towpower Brakeman IV Digital Brake Control is designed to handle from one to four braking axles and includes a digital display

  • Digital display indicates the amount of voltage power being delivered to the brake system and assists in accurately adjusting the trailer brakes for city or highway driving

  • Separate adjustment controls (Output & Sync) allow for adjustment of not only different weights (Output) of trailers, but also the speed of activation (Sync) depending on your driving style

  • Digital display for output setting, sync setting, brake overload or short connection

  • No levelling required; mounts in any direction

  • Small compact design with easy push button adjustment for output and sync

  • Compatible with 1 to 4 axle trailers

  • Plug and play feature allows quick and easy connection

  • Advanced internal circuit protection

  • For use on 12 volt negative ground systems only

Good Controller - Buttons Could be Better Located

Great controller - easy to install using the adapter kit for year/model vehicle. Button location could be improved. Using supplied hardware either results in a poor choice of mounting location, or reading the display upside down if it's desired to maintain access to the buttons.

Extra money for fancy display

I'm sure it works well, but I returned it and got a a Reese Brakeman Compact. These are both "timed" brake controllers so there is no difference in operation, the IV just has a fancy digital display, whereas the Compact only has slide controls for gain and sync. This is not a proportional brake controller, it only has one braking force set by the gain. The sync control sets the rate the brakes are applied only. It does not brake harder as you apply more braking effort to the vehicle. It just comes on when the brake lights are activated. It is good if the trailer is light compared to the tow vehicle, but for serious towing I would get a proportional controller. But for my purposes a timed controller is fine, and if you want to spend the extra money for the digital display this product is for you. Otherwise just get the 74762 (Compact).

Yes, I recommend this product.

Q: is it fit dodge 2019 bighorn?

3 Answers
  • A: This will work with any vehicle. The question is do you have a connection under your steering column where you can just get a harness that plugs into the truck harness and the brake controller. You may need to purchase a harness and then splice it into your trucks wire harness. Being as your asking the question your asking I would suggest paying a professional to install it.

Q: Will this work on a 2015 tundra?

  • A: Possibly, as long as the connector matches, usually you need an adapter for the vehicle and then almost any Reese controller would work. I would recommend getting a PROPORTIONAL controller instead of timed. This controller is NOT proportional. They cost a bit more but are superior in their operation, especially for heavier trailers and RV's.

Q: Will this work with my 2013 ford explorer

  • A: It will work if you wire it in yourself but unless you ordered your explorer with the tow package it won’t be plug and play and you’ll be needing to run wires front to back.

Q: will this unit work with a 2022 Toyota Tacoma?

  • A: Yes it will with an adapter to match your specific vehicle. You can get your specific vehicle plug in of which you have to splice the wires together with the wiring coming out of brake controller or you can get one of which you unplug the wiring from the back of brake controller and replace that with a 2 plug of which will plug into back of the controller and plug into your Toyota. Reese makes them and they are available at Canadian Tire I believe ( Part number 85100 ), Tekonsha makes them also.
