I bought this guage to replace one from the same manufacturer as the ancient one finally broke the needle. Previous to the failure it kept an accurate temperature reading. Apparently this new one was inaccurate by reading 100F too low. I ascertained this by checking with two different model Mastercraft handheld temperature readers.

A: No. The stove temperature will be way over the the capacity of the guage. Use it as per manufacturer instructions.

Q: We got ours this evening and the needle is Not Working; any advice? We have tried moving it up and down with no improvement. Thoughts? Please do not share email.

A: I know it takes a while before the thermometer reacts to the starting temp., but if you've had a good fire going for, say, half an hour, the needle should start to move. If you placed your unit about 18" above the top of your stove (single wall chimney) and had your fire going for, say, an hour and it stil isn't registering the chimney heat, then I'd say you have a defective unit. Take it back and get a new unit. I do not know how this unit would work on an insulated (double wall) chimney.
