    Mauvais achat

Cette cage est absolument inefficace pour prendre des ratons laveurs. Ils finissent tous par sortir après leur capture. À moins que ce soit un bébé raton. Pour l'avoir utilisé pendant 2 ans, je ne la conseille à personne.

    Fantastic Trap

I live in Toronto where we have a major raccoon problem. I bought one of these traps and it works like a charm. I've already caught two raccoons and relocated them away from my home. It took a few nights to figure out a really foolproof bait approach - I now take a mason jar, punch several holes in the top, fill it with a can of wet cat food and some scraps from my green bin. Then I use a cable tie to attach the bait jar to the inside/back of the cage. It prevents the raccoon from reaching in and snatching the bait without entering the cage. I also use one cable tie to attach the cage to a post on my back deck - to prevent the cage from being flipped. This approach is working flawlessly. From time to time they trip the door without going inside, but so far we've snagged two of them so we're confident we'll get more. In fact, last night there was one in the trap and three of its friends trying to get him out. Like I said, Toronto has a serious raccoon problem.

    Yes, I recommend this product.

    Déclencheur trop sensible

La cage elle même est solide mais le système de fermeture n'est pas adéquat. Le moindre tremblement le déclenche. Il manque de tension pour contre balancer le ressort de fermeture de la porte.

Q: Would this trap be big enough to catch porcupine? We have a porcupine that keeps attacking the trees in the orchard and need to trap/relocate it. Would this trap be suitable or could you suggest another trap, sold by Canadian Tire, that would?

    • A: Please note this cage trap would be suitable for a young porcupine, but not for a full size porcupine. A porcupine is probably the only animal that these traps are not ideally suited to. When a porcupine is scared it can expand / spread its quills so it’s about 3 times its normal size and if this happened while the animal is in the cage it will become difficult for the animal to get out of the cage. There is another Havahart trap that is not a currently listed item but would address your needs. If your local store can, they can place a special order for model # 1081. It has one spring loaded door. The trap measures 45” x 15” x 15”.

Q: Would this work on birds? Morning doves specifically?

    1 Answer
    • A: Unfortunately the Havahart EZ Set Live Trap will not be suitable for birds/Mourning Doves because the weight of the bird is not likely enough to trigger the trap. Another possible solution to deter the Mourning doves would be our Bird Scare Tape (059-6180).

Q: How do you get a skunk out? if one happens to get caught - can it be opened from a distance so we don't get sprayed?

    1 Answer
    • A: Here are 2 ways to get the skunks out, depending on the traps you use. Gravity trap: To release a skunk from this type of trap, simply take a long extended painters pole (18 feet, though you can use a shorter version), fully extend it and then from that distance, gently push the trap onto its roof. Once the trap is flipped over, the gravity door should open allowing the skunk to leave. Spring-loaded door trap: Spring-loaded traps are more difficult as the door must be manually manipulated to be reopened. In light of that, you should always place a cloth cover over half the length of the trap (at the end opposite the door) whenever you set it. The cloth allows you a way to approach the skunk without being seen. The cloth should be durable, like a towel, canvas or denim, as well as disposable. Secure the cloth on the trap so it won't blow away. Make sure you are comfortable with opening the trap door BEFORE setting it. If you catch a skunk, you will need to be able to open the door quickly to reduce the risk of being sprayed. Once you discover a skunk, you will need another cloth, large enough to completely cover the trap, and a brick or object that is tall and wide enough to keep the trap door open at least 5 inches but one that won't block the skunk's escape. With this equipment in hand, quietly approach the trap from the cloth side (so the skunk can't see you), holding the large cloth in front of you. Gently drape the cloth completely over the cage. Get the object that you will use to keep the door open. (Some spring-loaded traps actually have a device to do this.) When you are ready, take a quick peek to make sure the skunk is at the opposite end of the trap. Chances are he will be facing you as the noise will peak his interest. Quickly open the door prop it open. As you walk away, take the large blanket with you. Keep the blanket open between you and the trap as you quietly and methodically back away. While it is possible for the skunk to bolt out of the cage, it rarely happens. Usually, the skunk remains in the covered portion of the trap until he feels safe enough to walk out. Don't be surprised if he remains in the trap until nightfall.
