Google Nest Wi-Fi Connected Smart Thermostat, Charcoal

This is rather start of the 2nd winter we have had thus thermostat and it has given us constant problems with the furnace. The device will not properly engage the furnace and heat the home when the day time comfort setting starts after the overnight setting. We have had our furnace professionally assessed and it is not an issue with the furnace, the wiring or the battery life, it is the thermostat. Tried contacting Google after last winter and they refused to replace it as it was just outside the warranty period. I now have to replace this thermostat with a better product and am left with a useless $180 Google paperweight.

Hi, I received my Nest thermostat via Nova Scotia Power's "Efficiency Nova Scotia" programme to hep with better home energy use. It is a FANTASTIC programme. The Nest thermostat was install replacing an old Honeywell round puck-type model from the '60s or 70's. The furnace is about 20 years old, and in great shape, serviced regulalry. The wiring from furnace to thermostat is a simple 2 wire - power/Red, heat/White. There is no common/Black, and so the thermostat is not powered by the furnace. It is next to impossible to follow the wire to pull a 3 or 4 wire cable from the furnace, I am stuck with what is there. As such with the wiring, Nest's thermostats can operate without the Common wire. I believe this is achieved with a Lithium (or similar) battery pack within the package. About a month ago, just as heating season ended, the Nest showed a "low battery" or "replace battery" message. I contacted Efficiency Nova Scotia for a solution, but they do not service the unit, and it it was past warranty repair. Such is life and i am grateful for all that they have done for me. So I researched and sourced a fully compatible battery pack, and went about replacing the one inside the Nest unit. That task is not so easy. The battery pack is quite difficult to get at, and more so to remove. In removing it from the 4 pin connector, 3 of the 4 pins bent/broke. These pins are as thin as hair, and just lack any rigidness. It would take a very experienced person with micro-soldering to repair, beyond my skill-set for sure. So now I have a broken Nest thermostat, and a new battery-pack which can't be used. Does anyone know of a source of repair? In looking on-line, or at local hardware stores, the same Nest unit sells for about $180CDN. Similar functioning models from competition - Honeywell, Sensi - sell for 50-60$ less. But they must be wired with the Common wire. It seems that only Nest is C-wire free, I presume by using the battery-pack. So in the end I'll likely need to spend the $180 for a new one. I can't complain about the Nest model, it functioned very well with WiFi and my cell phone. I'm just not looking forward to replacing it outright every 4-5 years.

This thermostat does NOT connect to the Nest Sensors. Only the "E" and learning models do that. So, if you want to use remote sensors do not buy this thermostat. This site promotes the sensors with the thermostat, even though they don't work together... Easy enough to set up, clear directions, works fine as a thermostat but without the sensor it's basically the same as my old $80 wifi programmable thermostat, no reason to pay the extra $100. Taking it back and getting an Ecobee.

Nice to be able to control the temperature via wifi.
