Bought this to keep aboard my boat, thankfully haven't had to use it yet! It is the perfect size for mounting under the console and the mount allows you to remove the extinguisher easily should you ever need to use it.

Q: The description doesn't indicate "kitchens". Is this fire extinguisher not recommended for kitchens?

1 Answer
  • A: For a kitchen we recommend a BC only extinguisher though an ABC one will work. BC extinguishers use sodium bicarbonate which is relatively easy to clean afterwards should you ever need to use it. An ABC extinguisher uses monoammonium phosphate as its extinguishing agent (a fertilizer) which works on A class fires by melting onto hot surfaces, suffocating the flames. The problem in a kitchen is say your pot is on fire but you spray the entire stove (the powder spreads a lot), now you will have a yellow caked on stove that needs to be replaced even though it would have been able to still be used with a BC only extinguisher. If needed, an ABC extinguisher WILL WORK. It is just not the best option. Here is an explanation of the ULC ratings: - Class A refers to solids like wood and paper. The number refers to the equivalent to 1.25 US gal. of water. So a 4A rating means equivalent to 5 gals. of water. - Class B refers to liquid like fuels and grease. The number refers to the largest pan, in square feet, that the extinguishers was able to meet the extinguishing requirement. So a 40B rating refers to 40 square feet. - Class C refers to electrically charged fires. All class C extinguishers will also have a class A and/or B rating. There is no number as it refers to the internal agent not being conductive to electricity.

Q: When purchasing a fire extinguisher from Canadian Tire does it come serviced?

1 Answer
  • A: Dry chemical extinguishers (in this case, MonoAmmonium Phosphate) come ready to use. Servicing is recommended yearly (mandated for commercial offices - optional for private homes) but you must look up a local company that does that under "Fire Extinguisher Servicing" in the yellow pages. The small stores locally can better serve you than trying to ship dangerous goods (class 2.2, compressed gas) to a central location at high cost. Some fire stations can help you identify local service companies they use if you call their local phone number.

Q: Is this a commercial grade, multi-purpose extinguisher handles class A, B and C fires ?

1 Answer
  • A: Extinguishers have ratings that represent their capability. The letters represent the type of fires they can work on properly and the numbers associated with the letters refer to the capacity or size of that type of fire. Here is a general explanation of the ULC ratings: - Class A refers to solids like wood and paper. The number refers to the equivalent to 1.25 US gal. of water. So a 4A rating means equivalent to 5 gals. of water. - Class B refers to liquid like fuels and grease. The number refers to the largest pan, in square feet, that the extinguisher was able to meet the extinguishing requirement. So a 40B rating refers to 40 square feet. - Class C refers to electrically charged fires. All class C extinguishers will also have a class A and/or B rating. There is no number as it refers to the internal agent not being conductive to electricity. Please note the ratings are based on a professional use of the extinguisher and cannot be counted on as being the same for every user. Environmental conditions can also affect the effectiveness of an extinguisher (wind/humidity). Although there is a lot of mention of weight on extinguishers (2 lbs, 5 lbs, 10 lbs, etc…), it is not necessarily the best way to identify an extinguisher’s capability as the monoammonium phosphate found in ABC extinguishers may have different concentrations. Some brands’ 5 lbs extinguishers have the same rating as others’ 10 lbs. This means that as you choose your extinguishers, have a look at the rating as your primary decision factor. Determine how much coverage you wish to have (5 square feet, 40 square feet?). All fire extinguishers have a maximum life of 12 years (each has a number stamped into the base in the format of the last 2 digits of the year (“13” means 2013). This particular model has a 3A:40B:C rating and is aimed at residential and commercial applications – that is they sit on their bracket for years ready to be used. They should be visually inspected monthly to ensure no external damage or loss of pressure. For commercial applications, a professional organization must certify a yearly inspection. Look in the yellow pages under “Fire Extinguisher Servicing” for a local company.

Q: what is in the contents? it was discharged in a greenhouse and we need to know if it's toxic

1 Answer
  • A: The powder inside ABC fire extinguishers is Monoammonium Phosphate. A fertiliser extensively used to grow corn in the production of ethanol. Here is a link to the MSDS sheet for it: http://www.kiddecanada.com/utcfs/ws-463/Assets/Badger_ABC%20Dry%20Chemical%20MSDS.pdf It is an irritant if inhaled or on contact with eyes or skin but is otherwise non hazardous. Your plants are likely to grow well from it. If you have fruits and/or vegetables in the greenhouse, just rinse them clean before eating.

Q: Is this fire extinguisher CSA and NSPA approved? Further more is it also ready to use out of the box or does it need certification or additional service before beign put into use?

1 Answer
  • A: Extinguishers are not regulated by CSA – They are controlled by ULC following NFPA regulations (NFPA10). And Yes they are ready to be used out of the box. To maintain certification they have to be verified every year ( by owner – that the gauge is still in the green – attached there is a card to be filled out of the date that it was verified) and every 6 years the unit will need to be serviced by a servicing Fire Extinguisher company ( Yellow pages for the location near you).
