Q: How thick are these mats?

A: About 1/2” thick and 25 X 25” square. Each one is a different colour. I laid them 2 layers thick for padding at my stained glass table and they are very comfortable.

Q: Suitable for exercise mats? Would they be suitable for under a universal machine to provide some cushioning?

A: Yes. These mats are similar to the kind of flooring you might find in a multipurpose room or martial arts studio. Heavy equipment would likely leave dents, but would certainly serve the purpose.

Q: Is it suitable for outdoor also?

A: I have used a similar though different brand of connecting mat tiles under my 12 foot Easy Set pool for many years (same ones) without any problems - dense and durable. The Best Step probably could be used outdoors but not under heavy items as they may indent, or they may be slippery when wet (never tested this on the ones in the basement though the basket weave may provide some grip).
