A: The lantern requires batteries to operate. I think the black wire is just to operate it in the store to see what it looks like lit up before you buy it. Thats my assumption.

A: Hey There, The battery compartment is at the bottom of the product, you need to use a screw driver to remove the screw and open the lid, and then can put the battery in it.
