Measure out charcoal. Prepare your grill by determining how much charcoal you will need for the meal – one layer is ideal for burgers and steaks, and use two layers for roasts and chickens.

STEP 4

Stack in cone shape. Stacking the charcoal into a cone shape makes for the best grilling experience.

STEP 5

1/4 cup lighter fluid per pound of charcoal. Pour a quarter cup of lighter fluid per pound of charcoal over the cone-shaped stack of coals, distributing more fluid to the center than the edges. Let the fluid sit on the coals for 30 seconds.

STEP 6

Light coals from bottom on both sides. Take a BBQ lighter and light the coals from the bottom on at least two sides of the stack.

STEP 7

Let the coals burn until they are white on the surface.
