7 STEPS

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

STEP 1

Locate your vehicle colour code

To find your vehicle’s exact colour code, check your vehicle identification plate. The location of the plate varies depending on the make, model and year of your vehicle, but some common locations are inside the driver’s door jam, under the hood or in the glove box.

You can also consult the Colour Selector in the automotive section at your local Canadian Tire Store. Find the right paint pen by matching the colour code on the packaging with your vehicle’s colour code.

STEP 2

Clean out the scratch

Wipe down the damaged area with a damp cloth. If there’s any buildup, you can also use wax and grease remover. The cleaner the surface the smoother the paint will apply.

STEP 3

Prepare the surface

Using the abrasive tip on the pen, prepare the surface by removing any loose paint or rust. Use the pointed edge to clean out any fine scratches and the flat face to smooth down edges and clean larger areas. Wipe the area again and let it dry completely.

STEP 4

Prepare the applicator

Shake the pen for 20 to 30 seconds to mix the paint. Then choose the applicator that is best suited to the job.

The precision pen tip works well on fine scratches, while the tapered brush will easily cover larger chips.

If you’re using the pen tip, test out your pen on scrap paper to get the paint flowing before applying.

STEP 5

Paint the area

Carefully apply paint evenly and in one direction. Let it dry for 30 minutes. Repeat this process to add additional coats if needed.

STEP 6

Seal it

Holding the pen upright, twist off the bottom section to access the sealant applicator. Apply the clear sealer over the dry painted surface and let it dry for 30 minutes.

Use a clean cloth to wipe off any excess paint.

STEP 7

Store for future use

Make sure you store your pen at room temperature in a dry location, so you’re ready to take care of any future scratches.
