When buying a wetsuit, choose a functional suit in your size that serves the purpose you’re wearing it for. There are four general categories, including full wetsuits, long john suits, shortys, and wetsuit separates. They also come in several thicknesses to accommodate a range of temperatures and with different zipper configurations. Full wetsuits are commonly worn by those planning to do water sports, while shortys are worn when the weather is warm for a variety of purposes. Many suits come with their own unique features, such as fine mesh in certain areas, linings for antimicrobial protection, and more.

What size wetsuit do I need?

Measure your height, weight, chest, waist, and hips to determine the wetsuit size you need. It’s important to try on a wetsuit before purchasing one to get the right fit.

Do you wear anything under a wetsuit?

Wetsuits are designed as a second skin that doesn’t require you to wear anything underneath. However, you can opt to wear a swimsuit, Speedo-style suits, body rash guard, or base layer.

How warm does a wetsuit keep you?

Depending on the thickness of your wetsuit, a wetsuit can keep you warm in temperatures as cold as 6 degrees and below. Follow this general chart to choose the right thickness for you:

• < 6 degrees: 5-6mm

• 6 – 11 degrees: 3-5mm

• 11 – 14 degrees: 3-4mm

• 14 – 17 degrees: 2-4mm

• 16 – 20 degrees: 2-3mm

• 18 – 24 degrees: 0.5-2mm
