Q: Motor hums and blows the breaker at -5 . It has only had an hours use

  • A: Hello, We are concerned to learn that you had a less than great experience with this log splitter. This log splitter can work at -5. If an extension cord is used, please make sure to use a proper extension cord. The cord should be no longer than 32.5’ (10 m) with a cross-section of no less than 1/8” (2.5 mm) and a wire size (A.W.G.) of 12 in order to allow sufficient flow of electric current to the motor. The the problem still exists, please call Yardworks customer service at 1-866-523-5218 and one of their representatives can assist in resolving your concerns. Thank you for your feedback, Tina

Q: Is 10 inches the real maximum diameter or can you go higher...?

  • A: Hello Jozo, We recommend not exceed 10 inches. If the log is soft, it should can work on slightly exceed 10 inches log splitters, or you may need rotate the wood, and by two passes to split a large wood. Best Regards, Tina

Q: Purchased this last fall and used it several times with no issues. I went to move it within my garage and noticed oil had been dripping from the front end. Is this a defect? What should I do?

  • A: There is a valve at the cutting end of the splitter that needs to be shut when not in use . Make sure to check instructions as it needs to be opened before use . If that is closed , then you may have a defect .

Q: Can you run the 5 ton or the 6 ton with a 2000 watt generator?

2 Answers
  • A: Will it run…. Yes, Will it split the wood… probably not. I find the machine is great either the thickest, shortest extension cord possible. With a cheaper and/or longer cord the splitter will not be at its best.

Q: What will happen to my electric log splitter if I store it in an unheated shed over winter, and the temperature goes below -25C? Owners manual says it can be stored between -25C and 55C.

  • A: I have been using this log splitter for 2 years but I live on the south west coast of B.C. where the temperature rarely goes below -10C.  The first winter I stored my log splitter in an unheated shed and the 2nd winter I stored it outside under a waterproof tarp as I’m also doing this upcoming winter.  I haven’t had any problems with it!

Q: In terms of practical use, what’s the difference between the 4 ton and the 5 ton? I used to have the 4 ton, but found it slow. Cherrywood would often get jammed in the wedge. Will the 5 ton be much faster, with less jamming?

2 Answers
  • A: Hello Sarah, 5ton log splitter works better for hard and thick wood than 4ton log spliter does, and its speed is a little faster than speed of 4ton. But for jammed wood, there is no obvious difference between the two models. And for jammed wood do you mean when the wedge comes to the end, the wood cannot take apart natually? Normally this kind of situation related with fresh or moist wood. Tina
