Thule Apex XT 4-bike - stay away from the brand

I have been a loyal Thule customer for years and have owned several of their products. Sadly, my recent experience has completely shattered my trust in the brand. I purchased a Thule Apex XT 4-bike rack and used it as intended, only occasionally carrying two adult bikes and one child's bike. Recently, I made the alarming discovery that the central metal arm that goes into the hitch receiver had cracked. I was terrifyingly close to losing all my bikes on the highway. It's only by luck that the rack didn't break completely. When I submitted a case to Thule with photographs, their representative dismissed me, claiming the damage was "most likely caused by an impact in my garage." This is not only an unprofessional diagnosis but a complete refusal to take responsibility for what is clearly a critical product failure. Given the dangerous nature of this defect and their unwillingness to stand behind their product, my advice is simple: Stay away from this brand. There are other companies that offer both quality and responsible customer service.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Arms holding bikes broke off

We bought this with confidence after having sturdy Thule products in the past. After only four uses on our passenger van, an arm completely broke off, nearly totaling four of our kids bikes. All well below the weight limits for the arms. Tons of bounce in the arms for the bikes from the get go, straps worked fine. Was told it likely wasn’t the right hitch for our vehicle type so nothing covered by warranty.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Solid rack, one concern about hitch mount system

The rack is sturdy, well-built, and kept my bikes secure on the road. I was initially frustrated with the straps, but it turned out I was using them incorrectly. (If you don’t properly fit the ratcheting strap into the cradle, they can be difficult to loosen.) Now, onto my main concern: I’m still learning to fully trust the hitch mounting system. Since there’s no pin going through the parts, the rack is essentially held in place by "pressure." After the first use (around 100 miles), I noticed some wear marks on the 2-inch adapter, likely caused by wobbling. It also looks like the bolt rubbed against the “L” piece in the locking system, which has caused damage to the thread (see pictures). I came across another review where a damaged bolt was mentioned, and the knob was no longer tightening properly. In my case, the knob is still functioning, but I’m unsure how long it will last. For the price I paid, I honestly wasn’t expecting an issue like this.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Q: Can you confirm if this is the Thule Apex or the Apex XT? It is unclear to me. From some design elements, I'm thinking it may be the XT. Thanks.

  • A: I weighted all bikes my family travels with and came it to ~60Kg, which is still within their specs (68 Kg).
