We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Scotts Turf Builder Tough Custom Grass Seed & Fertilizer and appreciate your feedback.

You should start seeing germination in 7 days under ideal growing conditions. It will take about a month for all the seed to germinate. For this seed mix, which contains bluegrass, fescues and perennial ryegrass, soil temperatures must be at least 12.7 degrees Celsius (55 degrees F) for Grass Seed to germinate. This Grass Seed will germinate best when daytime temperatures are consistently in the 15.6 to 26.6-degree Celsius range (60-80-degree F). Depending on fall temperatures and soil condition, it may have been too late for seeding. Grass seed may remain dormant and germinate in the spring. Germination time is based on ideal conditions of soil warmth and a constant amount of moisture.

Questions

1 - 4 of 4 Questions

Q: A large component of disease and insect resistance in the tall fescue mix is endophyte fungi in seeds. How does Scott ensure the viability of the endophyte in the seeds sold, considering that 100% the endophyte becomes non viable after 11 months at 21C?

3 Answers
  • A: Endophytes do not occur naturally in the soil, is a fungi that live in the seeds, and cannot be inoculated in seeds if the fungi within the seed died (see http://www.omafra.gov.on.ca/english/crops/facts/endophyt.htm; see also https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/pest-control-tips/chinch-bugs.html: If replanting grass, choose an insect-resistant, endophytic variety of tall fescue or rye grass (endophytes are naturally occurring fungi that kill lawn pests, including chinch bugs).). The seed varieties chosen by Scott seems extraordinary and high in endophyte content. However, it seems from the answer that Scott takes no special measure to ensure quality and disease resistance of its seeds, and could be selling seeds more than 1 year old, claim that they are insect resistance, but without any surviving endophytes.

Q: Are all species in this mix perennial, as in: do they all come back every year?

2 Answers
  • A: They will come-back and continue to grow but you have to keep it healthy, so it'll continue to grow! (fertilizer, grub control, etc..)  Good Luck :-)

Q: Is this turf type tall fescue?

2 Answers
  • A: From what I am noticing in my yard, I do NOT think this product contains turf tall fescue. Very clumpy, and super wide course blades (grass is a beautiful shade of dark green). Where the fescue took, sticks out like a sore thumb and creates obvious discrepancies in the texture of my grass. My grass is lumby underfoot. Never had these patches in my grass until after using this product to fill in several patches throughout my lawn. Very disappointing.
